  1. 1. The interplay between Giardia intestinalis and host intestinal epithelial cells : A tale of immune activation and suppression

    Författare :Jana Grüttner; Staffan Svärd; Mikael E. Sellin; Steven Singer; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Giardia; diarrhea; RNAseq; proteomics; small intestinal epithelial cells; enteroids; organoids; protozoan; differentiation; immune response; host-parasite interaction; swimming; Biologi med inriktning mot mikrobiologi; Biology with specialization in Microbiology;

    Sammanfattning : Giardia intestinalis is a non-invasive, protozoan parasite causing the diarrheal disease giardiasis in a variety of mammals, including humans. The parasite has two main life cycle stages; disease-causing trophozoites and infectious cysts. Trophozoites colonize the host’s upper small intestine by attaching to intestinal epithelial cells (IECs). G. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Genome and transcriptome studies of the protozoan parasites Trypanosoma cruzi and Giardia intestinalis

    Författare :Oscar Franzén; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Trypanosoma cruzi and Giardia intestinalis are two human pathogens and protozoan parasites responsible for the diseases Chagas disease and giardiasis, respectively. Both diseases cause su ering and illness in several million individuals. LÄS MER

  3. 3. The Salmonella enterica virulence : its role in bacterial adaption to mammalian and protozoan cells

    Författare :Dilek Tezcan-Merdol; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Salmonella virulence plasmid; spvB gene; mono ADP-ribosyl transferase; actin; Acanthamoeba rhysodes;

    Sammanfattning : Salmonellae are Gram-negative enteric bacteria and facultative intracellular pathogens responsible for a diversity of illnesses in a wide range of hosts, including man. Many serovars of Salmonella enterica harbor a plasmid that enhances bacterial virulence in infection models, and that seems to promote extraintestinal infection in man. LÄS MER

  4. 4. The aquatic microbial food web and occurence of predation-resistant and potentially pathogenic bacteria, such as Francisella tularensis

    Författare :Johanna Thelaus; Agneta Andersson; Mats Forsman; Farooq Azam; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; bacteria; protozoa; ecology; predation; nutrient-availability; microbial food web; model; predation-resistance; Francisella; reservoir; biofilm formation; Freshwater ecology; Limnisk ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : All natural aquatic systems harbour a vast variety of microorganisms. In the aquatic microbial food web, the larger microorganisms (i.e. protozoa) feed on the smaller microorganisms (i. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Studies of the recognition and activation of natural killer cells

    Författare :Clas Une; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :NK cells; activation; cytotoxicity; IFN-[gamma] IFN-[alpha] [beta]; IL-12; G-PI; MHC class I;

    Sammanfattning : Natural killer (NK) cells mediate part of the innate immune response that impedes the spread of invading microorganisms and shapes the downstream adaptive immune response. NK cells spontaneously kill tumor cells and other cells upon contact. Killing requires engagement of germline encoded receptors that mediate positive and negative signals. LÄS MER
