16. The hemostatic pathway in ischemic stroke. Clinical studies of genetic variation and plasma protein measurements
Sammanfattning : Although stroke is a common cause of death and disability in adults, there are few studies on stroke compared to other common diseases. A stroke could be either ischemic or hemorrhagic, but even within these two groups, disease etiology shows heterogeneity. LÄS MER
17. Intestinal Gene Expression Profiling and Fatty Acid Responses to a High-fat Diet
Sammanfattning : The gastrointestinal tract (GIT) regulates nutrient uptake, secretes hormones and has a crucial gut flora and enteric nervous system. Of relevance for these functions are the G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) and the solute carriers (SLCs). LÄS MER
18. Functional characterisation of polymorphisms in candidate genes for coronary heart disease
Sammanfattning : Coronary heart disease (CHD) is a multifactorial disorder. Several important risk factors, in particular cigarette smoking, hypertension, hypercholesterolaemia, reduced high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol concentration and hyperglycaemia, have been defined. LÄS MER
19. Biochemical and Immunological Investigation of Quinol-Cytochrome c Reductase
Sammanfattning : In order to understand the mechanism of electron and proton transport within mitochondrial ubiquinol-cytochrome c reductase (Complex III), we have undertaken a biochemical and immunological investigation regarding the structure, function and topology of its subunits. A major part of this investigation deals with the two largest subunits, the so-called core proteins, which make up approximately 50 percent of the total Complex III protein. LÄS MER
20. Stainless Steel in Biological Environments – Relation between Material Characteristics, Surface Chemistry and Toxicity
Sammanfattning : Triggered by the regulatory need of the industry to demonstrate safe use of their alloy products from an environmental and health perspective, and by the significant lack of metal release data and its correlation to material and surface characteristics for iron- and chromium-based alloys, a highly interdisciplinary in-depth research effort was undertaken to assess the relation between material/surface characteristics and toxicity with main emphasis on stainless steel alloys. This thesis focuses predominantly on studies made on AISI 316L both as massive sheet and as powder particles, but includes also results for other stainless steel grades and reference metals and metal oxides.
