  1. 11. Intracranial facial nerve lesion : experimental study on neural degeneration and its treatment

    Författare :Per Mattsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to develop an experimental model that would generate extensive motor neuronal degeneration in adult rats, and furthermore to study mechanisms causing nerve cell death and effects of putative neuroprotective compounds. The facial nerve was chosen because it is well characterized and allows evaluation of functional recovery by analyzing vibrissae movements. LÄS MER

  2. 12. Central and peripheral adaptation after nerve repair with a synthetic biocompatible adhesive

    Författare :Thomas Landegren; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : The epineural repair technique is currently the accepted standard for peripheral nerve repair. However, due to the demanding nature of this method, it is not uncommon to delay or even omit action, especially in situations which are associated with extensive traumatic injuries. LÄS MER

  3. 13. Neuronal tracers for fine caliber spinal primary afferents and their response to peripheral nerve injury

    Författare :H Fredrik Wang; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Rat; Primary afferents; Dorsal root ganglion; Peripheral nerve injury; Spinal cord; Isolectin GSA I-B4; Soybean agglutinin; Cholera toxin B subunit; Horseradish peroxidase; Immunohistochemistry; Neuronal tracing;

    Sammanfattning : The isolectin B4 from Griffonia simplicifolia I (B4) and soybean agglutinin from the plant Glycine max (SBA), have been shown to bind to rat small-diameter dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons, and to fibers and presumed terminals in laminae I-II of the spinal cord dorsal horn. In the present thesis, these lectins and/or their horseradish peroxidase (HRP) conjugates, have been investigated in the rat with regard to their usefulness as selective neuronal markers of and axonally transported tracers for somatic and/or visceral spinal primary afferents with fine caliber, including unmyelinated, axons. 4. 14. On laminins and laminin receptors and their roles in regeneration and myelination of the peripheral nerve

    Författare :Wilhelm Wallquist; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Motoneuron; dorsal root ganglion neuron; integrin; laminin; Schwann cell; Sciatic nerve; regeneration; myelination; in situ hybridization; immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy.;

    Sammanfattning : One important prerequisite for successful axon regeneration is that appropriate extracellular molecules are available for outgrowing axons and that receptors for such molecules are found in the regenerating neuron. Laminin associated integrin subunits alpha3, alpha6, alpha7 and beta1 mRNAs are here shown to be present in rat motoneurons, and in the case of integrin subunits alpha7 and gamma1, also immunohistochemical (IHC) labelling of the proteins was demonstrated. 5. 15. Glial cell responses, complement and clusterin expression after lesions in central or peripheral nervous system

    Författare :Li Liu; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neurosciences; Glia; Complement; Clusterin; Proliferation; Peripheral nerve injury; Spinal cord injury; Rhizotomy; Neurovetenskap; Neurology; Neurologi; Neurology; neurologi;

    Sammanfattning : The present Thesis examines the expression and role of complement and the complement regulator clusterin after central or peripheral axon injury in relation to the responses of non-neuronal cells. Following peripheral sensory nerve injury, complement was expressed in the spinal cord and brain stem in association with reactive microglia, which also appeared to be a local source of complement.
