  1. 1. Macrophages and neutrophils in tissue homeostasis and recovery from ischemic injury

    Författare :Kristel Parv; Mia Phillipson; Gustaf Christoffersson; Per-Ola Carlsson; Stephen Jenkins; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; macrophages; neutrophils; hindlimb ischemia; ischemic disease; mural cells; diabetes mellitus; postnatal β cell maturation.;

    Sammanfattning : Neutrophils and macrophages have functions beyond protection against pathogens. The overall aim of the work presented in this thesis was to identify novel tasks for these innate immune cells in maintaining homeostasis. LÄS MER

  2. 2. On macrophage contributions to tissue homeostasis : New insights on pancreas development and healing of ischemic injury

    Författare :Carmen Herrera Hidalgo; Mia Phillipson; Andrés Hidalgo; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :macrophages; islets of Langerhans; β cell function; postnatal β cell maturation; hindlimb ischemia; blood flow regulation; mural cells; vessel pruning; diabetes mellitus; ischemic diseases;

    Sammanfattning : Besides providing host defence against innumerable threats, macrophages display additional key functions for preservation of tissue homeostasis. This thesis includes four studies that explore novel macrophage functions in both the development of islets of Langerhans and healing of ischemic injury in mice. LÄS MER

  3. 3. The role of PDGF-B in brain blood vessels

    Författare :Khayrun Nahar; Christer Betsholtz; Jean-Baptiste Demoulin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; PFBC; PDGFB; PDGFRB; Brain vasculature; Mural cells;

    Sammanfattning : The development of blood vessels is dependent on several molecular cues to form properly. A functional PDGF-B/PDGFR-b signaling is paramount for the investment of mural cells, that provide with support, to the developing vasculature. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Phenotypic and functional analysis of the mesenchymal stromal cell compartment in the thymus

    Författare :Katarzyna Sitnik; Slemhinnans immunologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; thymus; mesenchymal cells; retinoic acid; thymic epithelial cells;

    Sammanfattning : T cells are key cellular components of the adaptive immune system that play a critical role in our defense against pathogens and cancer but also contribute to pathology in the setting of chronic inflammation and autoimmunity. The thymus constitutes the body's major T cell production site, where bone marrow-derived progenitors migrate in a co-ordinated fashion through anatomically distinct cortical and medullary regions that are composed of epithelial and mesenchymal stromal elements. 5. 5. From endothelial cells to the vascular network : How cell migration and proliferation are orchestrated to build lymphatic vessels

    Författare :Di Peng; Katarzyna Koltowska; Vermot Julien; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Lymphangiogenesis; Cell migration; Zebrafish; Biologi med inriktning mot zoologisk utvecklingsbiologi; Biology with specialization in Animal Development;

    Sammanfattning : Lymphatic endothelial cells (LECs) migrate across body to form a branched network, which is crucial for fluid drainage and immune cell trafficking of the tissues. However, the molecular mechanisms behind the spatiotemporal regulation and fine-tuning of LEC migration remain largely unknown. LÄS MER
