1. Short and long-term effects of exposure to low dose and low dose rate of gamma radiation : using in vitro and in vivo models
Sammanfattning : Assessment of human health risks from exposure to ionizing radiation (IR) is mainly based on the extrapolation of results from epidemiological studies on populations exposed to relatively high doses and often at high dose rates (HDR). Risk estimates after exposure to low doses and in particular at low dose rates (LDR) remain controversial due to a lack of epidemiological evidence. LÄS MER
2. Evaluation of absorbed dose and image quality in mammography
Sammanfattning : Mammography refers to the X-ray examination of the human breast, and is considered the single most important diagnostic tool in the early detection of breast cancer, which is by far the most common cancer among women. There is good evidence from clinical trials, that mammographic screening can reduce the breast cancer mortality with about 30%. LÄS MER
3. Neonatally induced permanent neurotoxic effects of pesticides : identification of a vulnerable period for low dose effects

4. Single-Proton Irradiation of Living Cells - Development of New Tools for Low-Dose Radiation Research
Sammanfattning : A Single-Ion Hit Facility (SIHF) consists of a custom-build facility based in particle accelerators which offers irradiation controlling the number of delivered particles with a precise targeting localization. The irradiation spot can be confined down to the nanometre scale allowing the irradiation of subcellular compartments with a single particle. LÄS MER
5. Neonatal Exposure to Low-Dose Ionizing Radiation in Mice : Developmental Neurotoxic Effects of Single and Fractionated Doses and Interaction with Nicotine
Sammanfattning : This thesis aims to investigate the developmental neurotoxic effects of low-dose exposure to ionizing radiation, alone or together with nicotine, during a defined critical period of neonatal brain development in mice. Investigation of neurotoxic effects following fractionated or acute low-dose radiation, resembling the clinical situation during repeated CT scans or radiation delivered to non-target tissue during radiotherapy, and possible interaction effects with other agents, is of great importance for risk and safety evaluation.
