21. Low temperature acclimation in plants : alterations in photosynthetic carbon metabolism
Sammanfattning : Although low temperature plays an important role in determining agricultural yield, little is known about the effect on the underlying biochemical and physiological processes that influence plant growth. Photosynthesis and respiration are central to plant growth and both processes are heavily affected by temperature. LÄS MER
22. Quantitative conservation genetics of the rare plants Scabiosa canescens (Dipsacaceae) and Silene diclinis (Caryophyllaceae)
Sammanfattning : This thesis concerns quantitative genetic aspects of the conservation biology of two rare plants, Scabiosa canescens and Silene diclinis. Particular attention was given to the effects of genetic drift on the structuring of variation in allozymes and quantitative characters, the association between (current) population size and quantitative genetic variation, the level of inbreeding depression in fitness characters and morphology in a small, isolated population, and the effect of inbreeding and intraspecific hybridization on developmental instability. 23. Role of mycorrhiza symbiosis and phosphorus nutrition in plant growth, photosynthesis and secondary metabolism
Sammanfattning : Inorganic phosphorus (Pi) is an important and often limiting nutrient for plants. Large amounts of Pi fertilizers derived from non-renewable rock phosphorus, are used in agriculture. These are applied in excess but crops take up only a small amount of Pi; the residual Pi ends up in water systems where it causes problems with eutrophication. LÄS MER
24. Forage legumes as feed for pigs in smallholder production systems in the North of Lao PDR : production systems, forage biomass yield and protein nutrition
Sammanfattning : This thesis sought to characterise and understand existing smallholder pig production systems in the North of Lao PDR and to investigate the role of forage legumes as alternative protein sources for pigs in smallholder production systems. A survey found that there were three main pig rearing systems, free-scavenging, semi-scavenging and confinement (enclosures and pens), in the study areas. LÄS MER
25. Cell-to-Cell Signalling in Arabidopsis Root Development
Sammanfattning : Development in multicellular organisms requires a strict balance between cell division and differentiation. The simple architecture of the Arabidopsis thaliana root makes it an ideal model for studying molecular mechanisms controlling both the transition from cell division to cell differentiation and cell fate determination.
