  1. 1. Programmed Cell Death in Xylem Development

    Författare :Laetitia Charleen Courtois-Moreau; Hannele Tuominen; Stefan Jansson; Christina Dixelius; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; PCD Programmed Cell Death ; Xylem; Apoptosis; Autophagy; Secondary Cell Walls; Microscopy; Microarrays; Comet Assay; TUNEL Assay; Cell and molecular biology; Cell- och molekylärbiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Concerns about climate changes and scarcity of fossil fuels are rising. Hence wood is becoming an attractive source of renewable energy and raw material and these new dimensions have prompted increasing interest in wood formation in trees, in both the scientific community and wider public. 2. 2. Xylem cells cooperate in the control of lignification and cell death during plant vascular development

    Författare :Sacha Escamez; Hannele Tuominen; Andrew Groover; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Xylem; Arabidopsis; programmed cell death; tracheary element; xylem vessel; autophagy; metacaspase; lignin; secondary cell wall; chromatin; gene expression;

    Sammanfattning : The evolutionary success of land plants was fostered by the acquisition of the xylem vascular tissue which conducts water and minerals upwards from the roots. The xylem tissue of flowering plants is composed of three main types of cells: the sap-conducting tracheary elements (TE), the fibres which provide mechanical support and the parenchyma cells which provide metabolic support to the tissue. 3. 3. New regulators of xylem lignification in arabidopsis

    Författare :Bernadette Sztojka; Hannele Tuominen; Simon Hawkins; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Xylem; lignin; Arabidopsis; secondary cell wall; transcriptional regulation; lignin-biosynthetic gene; S G lignin ratio;

    Sammanfattning : The ability of land plants to grow upright, bear their own weight and withstand adverse environmental conditions is largely dependent on the secondary xylem tissues of the stem. The xylem cells acquire thick secondary cell walls which are composed of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Stelar Performance Under Drought : Regulation of Developmental Robustness and Plasticity of the Arabidopsis Root Xylem

    Författare :Prashanth Ramachandran; Annelie Carlsbecker; Ari Pekka Mähönen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :HD-ZIP III TFs; miR165; Xylem; ABA; VND; plasticity; water deficit; Biologi med inriktning mot fysiologisk botanik; Biology with specialization in Physiological Botany;

    Sammanfattning : Plants have evolved genetic mechanisms to sense, modulate and modify developmental programs in response to the changing environment. This brings forth challenges in stably generating tissue patterns while simultaneously allowing amenability. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Cellular Aspects of Lignin Biosynthesis in Xylem Vessels of Zinnia and Arabidopsis

    Författare :Henrik Serk; Edouard Pesquet; Simon Hawkins; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Lignin; tracheary elements; xylem wood; post-mortem lignification; non-cell autonomous process; xylem parenchyma; endoreplication; reactive oxygen species; laccases; peroxidases; molecular cell biology; molekylär cellbiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Lignin is the second most abundant biopolymer on earth and is found in the wood (xylem) of vascular land plants. To transport the hydro-mineral sap, xylem forms specialized conduit cells, called tracheary elements (TEs), which are hollow dead cylinders reinforced with lateral secondary cell walls (SCW). LÄS MER
