  1. 1. Morphological and chemical leaf traits of tropical montane tree species and their responses to warming

    Författare :Manishimwe Aloysie; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; tropical montane forests; tropical trees; leaf morphology; leaf nutrients; warming climate; climate change;

    Sammanfattning : Leaf morphological and chemical traits of tropical trees vary along climate gradients, but it is currently unclear how they will respond to a rapidly warming climate and how this will vary among species. Considering this, tropical trees native to East and Central Africa were investigated in three complementary studies in Rwanda. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Comparative morphological studies of fossil and living plane trees (Platanaceae) and oaks (Quercus): taxonomy, ecology, evolution

    Författare :Georg Florian Tschan; Thomas Denk; Ove Eriksson; Bertil Ståhl; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Platanaceae; Platanus; Credneria; Quercus; Galliferae; leaf architecture; epidermal anatomy; comparative morphology; character variation; variability; sample size; diversity patterns; species concepts; ecology; biogeography; evolution; plant fossils; Plant Ecology; växtekologi;

    Sammanfattning : Morphological characters are essential for flowering plant identification, but also provide information about diversity patterns and ecological adaptation. In woody plant species, characters of the leaf are among the most useful and can be examined on fossils as well. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Preparation of leaf mitochondria and studies on mitochondrial photorespiratory reactions

    Författare :Per Gardeström; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; leaf mitochondria; photorespiration; aqueous two-phase system; Percoli gradient; cytochromes; glycine decarboyxlase; serine hydroxymethyltransferase; inhitors of photorespiration;

    Sammanfattning : A procedure for the preparation of spinach leaf mitochondria was developed. The procedure combines differential centrifugation, partition in dextran- polyethyleneglycol two-phase system and Percoli density gradient centri- fugation. The different steps separate the material mainly according to size, surface properties and density, respectively. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Plastidial phosphate transport in plants

    Författare :Patrik Milton Karlsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Arabidopsis; phosphate transport; thylakoid membrane; root plastid; photosynthesis; leaf size; starch metabolism; homology modeling; site-directed mutagenesis;

    Sammanfattning : Phosphorus is an essential element for all living organisms and is central to the genetics and energetics of life. Inorganic phosphate (Pi) is recurrently involved in protein regulation and signal transduction but also in energy transfer as a component of the ATP-molecule. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Plant-Herbivore Interactions and Evolutionary Potential of Natural Arabidopsis lyrata Populations

    Författare :Adriana Puentes; Jon Ågren; Jenny Hagenblad; Roosa Leimu Brown; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; plant defenses; leaf herbivory; floral herbivory; ontogeny; G-matrix; trade-offs; Biology with specialization in Ecological Botany; Biologi med inriktning mot ekologisk botanik; Biology with specialization in Evolutionary Genetics; Biologi med inriktning mot evolutionär genetik;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis, I combined field, greenhouse and common-garden experiments to examine the ecological and evolutionary consequences of plant-herbivore interactions and the genetic architecture of fitness-related traits in the insect-pollinated, self-incompatible, perennial herb Arabidopsis lyrata. More specifically, I examined (1) whether damage to leaves and inflorescences affects plant fitness non-additively, (2) whether trichome production is associated with a cost in terms of reduced tolerance to leaf and inflorescence damage, (3) whether young plant resistance to a specialist insect herbivore varies among populations, and (4) whether the evolution of flowering time, floral display and rosette size is constrained by lack of genetic variation or by genetic correlations among traits.
