  1. 1. Context dependency of plant – animal interactions

    Författare :Malin A. E. König; Johan Ehrlén; Christer Wiklund; John Stinchcombe; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Anthocharis cardamines; attack intensity; Cardamine pratensis; cytotype; herbivory; larval fitness; oviposition; phenology; plant-animal interactions; plant resistance; plant tolerance; polyploidy; spatial variation; trait variation; Plant Ecology; växtekologi;

    Sammanfattning : The strength and direction of interactions between organisms vary spatially across the landscape. Traditionally, the focus has been on how trait variation affects the interactions between species. However, differences in abiotic and biotic environmental factors may also alter the distribution, phenology and behavior of the interacting species. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Life-history consequenses of host plant choice in the comma butterfly

    Författare :Lina Söderlind; Sören Nylin; Niklas Janz; Charles W. Fox; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Nymphalidae; voltinism; larval performance; Hopkins’ Host Selection Principle; GeneFishing; real-time qPCR; Urtica dioica; Salix cinerea; Betula pubescens; Ulmus glabra; Ribes uva-crispa.; zoologisk ekologi; Animal Ecology;

    Sammanfattning : There is much evidence that herbivory is a key innovation for the tremendous success of insect. In this thesis I have investigated different aspects of host plant utilization and phenotypic plasticity using the polyphagous comma butterfly, Polygonia c-album. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Body Size Evolution in Butterflies

    Författare :David Berger; Karl Gotthard; Wolf Blanckenhorn; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Body size evolution; age- and size at maturity; life history theory; fecundity; predation risk; juvenile growth rate; Lepidoptera; Biology; Biologi; zoologisk ekologi; Animal Ecology;

    Sammanfattning : Life history research deals with the scheme of resource partitioning to a wide spectra of processes and the trade-offs shaping these events. One of the most fundamental life history trade-offs is the one of at which age- and size an organism should start to reproduce; reaching a large size at maturity is often advantageous in terms of high adult survival and reproductive potential, while to attain a larger size the organisms must prolong juvenile development which is assumed costly in terms of mortality. 4. 4. Searching for food in complex environments : Integrating processes at multiple spatial scales

    Författare :Thomas Alexander Verschut; Peter Hambäck; Peter Anderson; Ring Cardé; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Associational effects; Natal experiences; Olfaction; Oviposition; Plant Ecology; växtekologi;

    Sammanfattning : Resources are often unevenly distributed through the environment, resulting in a challenging task for insects to locate food, mates and oviposition sites. Consequently, there is an ongoing need to unravel how insects rely on behavioural and sensory traits while searching for resources in heterogeneous environments. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Predator effects on behaviour and life-history of prey

    Författare :Tomas Brodin; Frank Johansson; Bradley Anholt; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; activity; behaviour; behavioural syndromes; damselfly; development; growth; life-history; predator-prey interaction; predation risk; thinning; Freshwater ecology; Limnisk ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis I investigate predator-induced effects on behavioural and life-history characteristics of prey. At any moment a given predator is capable of attacking a small number of prey. LÄS MER
