  1. 1. The plasticity and geography of host use and the diversification of butterflies

    Författare :Jessica Slove Davidson; Niklas Janz; Tommi Nyman; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Nymphalidae; host range; phylogeny; distribution; latitude; phylogeography; local specialisation; colonisation; host shift; polyphagy; speciation; diversification; zoologisk ekologi; Animal Ecology;

    Sammanfattning : Our world is changing rapidly and factors like urbanisation, changed agricultural practices and climate change are causing losses in butterfly diversity. It is therefore of importance to understand the source of their diversity. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Ecology of red admiral migration

    Författare :Oskar Brattström; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Nymphalidae; Lepidoptera; migration patterns; migration; genetic structure; AFLP; lipid content; Inachis io; stable isotopes; orientation; navigation; weather; Animal ecology; red admiral; Vanessa atalanta; Djurekologi;

    Sammanfattning : The red admiral (Vanessa atalanta) is a migratory butterfly that can be found in North America, North Africa, Europe and some parts of Asia. In Europe the main part of the population spend winter in the Mediterranean region and the following spring leave this area to breed further to the north. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Life-history consequenses of host plant choice in the comma butterfly

    Författare :Lina Söderlind; Sören Nylin; Niklas Janz; Charles W. Fox; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Nymphalidae; voltinism; larval performance; Hopkins’ Host Selection Principle; GeneFishing; real-time qPCR; Urtica dioica; Salix cinerea; Betula pubescens; Ulmus glabra; Ribes uva-crispa.; zoologisk ekologi; Animal Ecology;

    Sammanfattning : There is much evidence that herbivory is a key innovation for the tremendous success of insect. In this thesis I have investigated different aspects of host plant utilization and phenotypic plasticity using the polyphagous comma butterfly, Polygonia c-album. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Evolutionary history of the butterfly subfamily Satyrinae (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae)

    Författare :Carlos Peña; Niklas Wahlberg; Roderic Page; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; hostplant use; habitat shift; diversity; grasses; biogeography; phylogeny; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi; zoologisk ekologi; Animal Ecology;

    Sammanfattning : I present an overview of the evolutionary history of Satyrinae butterflies (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae). By using Bayesian and cladistic methods, I develop a phylogenetic hypothesis as a basis for studying the evolutionary history of the group. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Phylogenetic perspective on host plant use, colonization and speciation in butterflies

    Författare :Elisabet Weingartner; Sören Nylin; Niklas Wahlberg; Felix Sperling; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Oscillation hypothesis; speciation; Polygonia; Celastrina; Pararge; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi; zoologisk ekologi; Animal Ecology;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis we have studied speciation in three butterfly genera Polygonia (Nymphalidae, Nymphalini), Pararge (Nymphalidae, Satyrinae) and Celastrina (Lycaenidae: Polyommatinae). In the first paper a dated phylogeny, based on molecular data, of Polygonia was constructed. We found strong conflict between the nDNA and mtDNA datasets. LÄS MER
