  1. 1. Context dependency of plant – animal interactions

    Författare :Malin A. E. König; Johan Ehrlén; Christer Wiklund; John Stinchcombe; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Anthocharis cardamines; attack intensity; Cardamine pratensis; cytotype; herbivory; larval fitness; oviposition; phenology; plant-animal interactions; plant resistance; plant tolerance; polyploidy; spatial variation; trait variation; Plant Ecology; växtekologi;

    Sammanfattning : The strength and direction of interactions between organisms vary spatially across the landscape. Traditionally, the focus has been on how trait variation affects the interactions between species. However, differences in abiotic and biotic environmental factors may also alter the distribution, phenology and behavior of the interacting species. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Plant-Animal Interactions and Evolution of Floral Display and Flowering Phenology in Arabidopsis lyrata

    Författare :Saskia Sandring; Jon Ågren; Johan Ehrlén; José Gómez; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Ecology; Arabidopsis lyrata; natural selection; floral display; phenology; flowering time; plant-animal interactions; pollination; herbivory; selection gradients; population differentiation; local adaptation; Ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis, I combined comparative and experimental approaches to examine selection on reproductive traits, and population differentiation in the insect-pollinated, outcrossing, perennial herb Arabidopsis lyrata. More specifically, I (1) determined whether selection on flowering phenology and floral display can be attributed to interactions with pollinators and herbivores, (2) examined whether population differentiation in flowering phenology and floral display is correlated with current selection on these traits, and (3) tested for local adaptation from contrasting environments in Europe. 3. 3. Plant-animal interactions and seed output of two insectpollinated herbs

    Författare :Anna R. Waites; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; plant reproduction; pollen limitation; pollinator behaviour; heterostyly; seed predation; Lythrum salicaria; Pedicularis palustris; stigma receptivity; self-pollen; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : I combined comparative and experimental studies in the field and in the greenhouse to examine factors influencing reproductive success in two insect-pollinated herbs, the tristylous, selfincompatible perennial Lythrum salicaria and the self-compatible, biennial Pedicularis palustris. More specifically, I explored (i) the effects of plant population characteristics on the intensity and outcome of interactions with pollinators and seed predators, (ii) whether flower morphology affects duration of stigma receptivity, and (iii) whether damage-induced reduction in floral display reduces pollinator visitation and increases pollen limitation. 4. 4. Plant-seed predator interactions – ecological and evolutionary aspects

    Författare :Hannah Östergård; Johan Ehrlén; Peter Hambäck; William Kunin; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; apparent competition; community context; fruit abortion; defence; host range; monophagous; offence; oligophagous; plant-animal interactions; pre-dispersal seed predation; selection; spatio-temporal variation; Biology; Biologi; Plant Ecology; växtekologi;

    Sammanfattning : Plant-animal interactions are affected by both abundance and distribution of interacting species and the community context in which they occur. However, the relative importance of these factors is poorly known. LÄS MER

  5. 5. The spatial and temporal dynamics of plant-animal interactions in the forest herb Actaea spicata

    Författare :Hugo von Zeipel; Johan Ehrlén; Ove Eriksson; Saskya van Nouhuys; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Eupithecia immundata; parasitoid; rodent; seed predation; dispersal; recruitment; multitrophic; metapopulation; trophic cascades; community complexity; Biology; Biologi; Plant Ecology; växtekologi;

    Sammanfattning : Landscape effects on species performance currently receives much attention. Habitat loss and fragmentation are considered major threats to species diversity. Deciduous forests in southern Sweden are previous wooded pastures that have become species-rich communities appearing as islands in agricultural landscapes, varying in species composition. LÄS MER
