21. Pharmaceutical Protection of Beta-Cells in Diabetes : Using Tyrosine Kinase Inhibition and NOX4 Inhibitors
Sammanfattning : Diabetes mellitus is a complex and heterogenous disease, with loss of beta-cell function and mass being a characteristic of not only type 1 diabetes (T1D), but also type 2 diabetes (T2D). In T1D, inappropriate inflammatory signaling is thought to participate in the autoimmune suppression and destruction of beta-cells. LÄS MER
22. Studies of pancreatic islet microcirculation and insulin secretion in normal and diabetic rats
Sammanfattning : Type 2 diabetes is increasing globally. The disease is characterized not only by hyperglycemia, but also by insulin resistance with attendant dyslipidemia, hypertension and endothelial dysfunction. These aberrations may result in macrovascular disease, and deeply impact the longevity and quality of life in diabetic patients. LÄS MER
23. Systemic sclerosis : vascular, pulmonary and immunological aspects
Sammanfattning : In systemic sclerosis (SSc), interstitial lung disease (ILD) and engagement of the vascular system lead to increased morbidity and mortality. The aim of this thesis was to elucidate, in a consecutively included cohort of SSc (limited and diffuse) patients (n = 33), the T cell cytokine profile driving the disease in ILD and to explore the role of matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) and its inhibitor: tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 1 (TIMP-1) in the extracellular matrix (ECM) degrading process leading to fibrous scarring and honey combing. 24. The regulation of incorrect splicing of ISCU in hereditary myopathy with lactic acidosis
Sammanfattning : Patients suffering from hereditary myopathy with lactic acidosis (HML) can be found in the northern Swedish counties of Ångermanland and Västerbotten. HML is a rare autosomal recessive disease where patients display a low tolerance to exercise at an early age. LÄS MER
25. PCR inhibition mechanisms in forensic DNA analysis
Sammanfattning : In forensic DNA analysis, the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) enables DNAanalysis of minute biological crime scene traces. PCR is an enzymatic reaction for amplification of specific DNA fragments involving both biochemical andbiophysical processes. The main analytical challenge is posed by the nature of the samples of interest. LÄS MER
