  1. 21. Sexual conflict and selection on pistil and pollen traits

    Författare :Josefin Madjidian; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Antagonistic trait; Collinsia heterophylla; delayed stigma receptivity; direct cost; first-donor advantage; gender bias; heritability; indirect benefit; mate choice; mixed-mating system; paternal diversity; pollen competition; pollen deposition; pollen load size; pollen tube growth rate; self-compatibility; semantics; sexual conflict; sexual selection; sexually antagonistic co-evolution;

    Sammanfattning : The incidence of sexual selection in plants is today acknowledged, however, just as in animals, evolution and maintenance of mate choice is gravely underexplored. Moreover, the potential for sexual conflicts to occur in plants has only been assessed empirically to a very limited degree. LÄS MER

  2. 22. East African Hydropatriarchies : An analysis of changing waterscapes in smallholder irrigation farming

    Författare :Martina Angela Caretta; Lowe Börjeson; Margreet Zwarteveen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; smallholder irrigation farming; local gender contract; landesque capital; common property regimes; dry lands; feminist epistemology; member checking; Kenya; Tanzania; Geography with Emphasis on Human Geography; geografi med kulturgeografisk inriktning;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis examines the local waterscapes of two smallholder irrigation farming systems in the dry lands of East African in a context of socio-ecological changes. It focuses on three aspects: institutional arrangements, gender relations and landscape investments. LÄS MER

  3. 23. Accidental hypothermia and local cold injury : physiological and epidemiological studies on risk

    Författare :Helge Brändström; Michael Haney; Urban Wiklund; Anders Eriksson; Karl-Axel Ängquist; Ola Winsö; Sigridur Kalman; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; cold-related injuries; hypothermia; frostbite; cold adaptation; rewarming; autonomic nervous system; heart rate variability;

    Sammanfattning : Background: (Papers I and II) The objectives were to first determine incidence and contributing factors to cold-related injuries in northern Sweden, both those that led to hospitalization and those that led to fatality.  (Papers III and IV) A further aim was to assess post-cooling hand-rewarming responses and effects of training in a cold environment, both on fingertip rewarming and on function of the autonomic nervous system, to evaluate if there was adaptation related to prolonged occupational cold exposure. 4. 24. Patient stratification and treatment effects in diseases with disturbed cardiac function

    Författare :Gabriel Granåsen; Urban Wiklund; Frida Sandberg; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Biostatistics; Heart rate variability; Cardiac amyloidosis; hypertrophic cardiomyopathy; cluster analysis; Echocardiography; Long QT syndrome; Pediatric; Statins; Coronary artery calcium; Computer tomography; Machine learning; Predictive modeling;

    Sammanfattning : Background: Cardiovascular disease characteristics are often measured using a combination of different measurement modalities. By combining information from these modalities using statistical modelling we can gain additional knowledge about these diseases. LÄS MER

  5. 25. Reproductive Biology and Population Genetics of Common Ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.)

    Författare :Grazyna Bochenek; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Fraxinus excelsior; delayed fertilization; functional dioecy; gender-related grow difference; inbreeding; tree-rings; non random mating; wind-pollination;

    Sammanfattning : Common Ash, Fraxinus excelsior L. (Oleaceae) is a wind-pollinated, wind-dispersed, deciduous tree, commonly occurring throughout Central and Northern Europe. The thesis addresses several questions concerning reproductive biology and factors influencing the genetic richness of ash stands. LÄS MER
