  1. 11. Spatial Variation in Near-Ground Radiation and Low Temperature - Interactions with Forest Vegetation

    Författare :Kristina Blennow; Institutionen för naturgeografi och ekosystemvetenskap; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; light interception; hemispherical photograph; growth; forest fragmentation; fluorescence; cold-induced photoinhibition; GIS; view factor; radiative cooling; frost protection; agro-climatic mapping; forest clear-cut; local climate; Microclimate; Physical geography; geomorphology; pedology; cartography; climatology; Fysisk geografi; geomorfologi; marklära; kartografi; klimatologi;

    Sammanfattning : Low temperature has a large impact on the survival and distribution of plants. Interactive effects with high irradiance lead to cold-induced photoinhibition, which may impact on the establishment and growth of tree seedlings. LÄS MER

  2. 12. The Late Holocene history of beech Fagus sylvatica and Norway spruce Picea abies at stand-scale in southern Sweden

    Författare :Leif Björkman; Kvartärgeologi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; physical geography; Geology; south Sweden; Late Holocene; succession; disturbance; forest history; forest continuity; population dynamics; immigration; palaeoecology; pollen analysis; Fagus sylvatica; Picea abies; Geologi; fysisk geografi; Palaeobotany; phylogeny; palynology; Paleobotanik; fylogeni; palynologi;

    Sammanfattning : High resolution pollen analysis was carried out on five peat profiles from small forest hollows at four sites in southern Sweden. The general aim was to investigate the establishment of Fagus sylvatica and Picea abies at stand-scale. LÄS MER

  3. 13. Environmental Effects of Agricultural Expansion in the Upper Amazon : A study of river basin geochemistry and hydrochemistry, and farmers' perceptions

    Författare :Lina Lindell; Mats Åström; Marianne Henningsson; Pasi Peltola; Tommy Claesson; Michael E McClain; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Nyckelord :tropical humid forest; deforestation; land-use change; slash-and-burn agriculture; spatial variation; vertical distribution; multielement analysis; sustainable development; rural livelihoods; bosque húmedo tropical; deforestación; cambios de uso de la tierra; agricultura de tala y quema; variabilidad espacial; distribución vertical; análisis multielemental; desarrollo sostenible; cambio climático; sustentos rurales; Miljövetenskap; Environmental Science;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis natural science is combined with environmental psychology in order to determine how deforestation and subsequent agricultural expansion in the Peruvian highland jungle has affected the natural environment and rural livelihoods. This region is part of one of the most biodiverse areas on Earth and is also exposed to high pressure from deforestation that threatens the ecosystems as well as the well-being of local populations. 4. 14. System Expansion and Allocation in Life Cycle Assessment With Implications for Wastepaper Management

    Författare :Tomas Ekvall; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; modelling; paper recycling; waste incineration; environmental life cycle assessment; LCI methodology; allocation; waste management; system expansion; system boundaries; life cycle inventory analysis;

    Sammanfattning : The choice of system boundaries and allocation methods can have decisive effects on the results and conclusions of a life cycle assessment (LCA). System expansion makes it possible to model the indirect effects of a decision; however, this modelling is often based on inaccurate assumptions. LÄS MER

  5. 15. Brazilian public protection regulations and the preservation of ecosystem services and biodiversity

    Författare :Flavio L. M. Freitas; Ulla Mörtberg; Jan Börner; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Brazil; Native vegetation; forest conservation; Brazilian Forest Act; Protected areas; Ecosystem services; Biodiversity; Land and Water Resources Engineering; Mark- och vattenteknik;

    Sammanfattning : Brazil is significant for sustaining ecosystems services and biodiversity of global importance. However, the expansion of forestry and agriculture to supply national and international markets often results in loss of ecosystem services and biodiversity. Public protection regulations play a crucial role in setting limits for agricultural expansion. LÄS MER
