1. Bioassay analysis of dioxin-like compounds : response interactions and environmental transformation of Ah receptor agonists
Sammanfattning : Dioxin-like compounds mediate their toxicity by binding to the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) and through this receptor a cascade of biochemical and toxic events are triggered. Mechanism-specific dioxin bioassays utilise the AhR coupled induction of endogenous CYP1A proteins or reporter gene systems for detection of dioxin-like compounds and other AhR ligands. LÄS MER
2. Mechanisms of regulation of dioxin receptor function
Sammanfattning : The dioxin receptor is a ligand-inducible transcription factor that belongs to the basic helix-loop- helix/Per-Arnt-Sim (bHLH/PAS) family of transcription factors. The dioxin receptor is regulated in a spatial manner, where the unliganded dioxin receptor resides in the cell cytoplasm in a complex with heat shock protein 90 (hsp90). LÄS MER
3. Computational methods for analyzing dioxin-like compounds and identifying potential aryl hydrocarbon receptor ligands : multivariate studies based on human and rodent in vitro data
Sammanfattning : Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are omnipresent and persistent environmental pollutants. In particular, 29 congeners are of special concern, and these are usually referred to as dioxin-like compounds (DLCs). LÄS MER
4. Genetic, environmental and life-style effects on androgen receptor function
Sammanfattning : Androgens regulate male reproductive function and their effects are mediated through the androgen receptor (AR). The AR gene contains a polymorphic CAG repeat, encoding a stretch of glutamines, affecting the transcriptional activity of the AR. LÄS MER
5. Sources of dioxins and other POPs to the marine environment : Identification and apportionment using pattern analysis and receptor modeling
Sammanfattning : In the studies underlying this thesis, various source tracing techniques were applied to environmental samples from the Baltic region. Comprehensive sampling and analysis of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) in surface sediments in Swedish coastal and offshore areas resulted in a unique data set for this region.
