6. Development of multi-cellular human lung models to study inflammatory mechanisms and cell-cell interactions
Sammanfattning : It is well known that exposure to toxicants in the environment is associated with a wide range of health effects. The airway epithelium which forms the first line of defense, plays critical roles in the defence against inhaled particles, pathogens and toxic agents. LÄS MER
7. Algorithmic discovery, development and personalized selection of higher-order drug cocktails : A label-free live-cell imaging & secretomics approach
Sammanfattning : An upward trend in clinical pharmacology is the use of multiple drugs to combat complex and co-occurring diseases due to better efficacy, decreased toxicity and reduced risk of evolving resistance. Despite high late-stage attrition rates and the need for multi drug treatments, most drug discovery and development efforts are still mainly focused on new one-size-fits-all monotherapies. LÄS MER
8. Too close for comfort : The role of Contact-Dependent growth Inhibition (CDI) in interbacterial competition and cooperation
Sammanfattning : Contact-Dependent growth inhibition (CDI) was discovered in 2005 in the E. coli isolate EC93. Since then our knowledge of CDI systems and their impact on bacterial communities have increased exponentially. LÄS MER
9. Plasma membrane arabinogalactan proteins
Sammanfattning : Arabinogalactan proteins (AGPs) are proteoglycans found at the outer side of the plasma membrane and in the extracellular matrix of plants. To be able to study the plasma membrane bound AGPs, a method using SDS-agarose gel electrophoresis (SDS-AGE) was developed to overcome the problems associated with electrophoretic separation of highly glycosylated proteins. 10. Investigating a cell replacement therapy in the inner ear
Sammanfattning : The mammalian auditory system is sensitive to genetic disorders, aging and injuries caused by overstimulation, ototoxic drugs and viral infections. Since the sensory epithelium (the organ of Corti) and the spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs) in adult mammalian do not regenerate spontaneously when they are damaged, a cell substitution strategy was proposed to compensate the function of the degenerated SGNs.
