6. On a novel technique for preparation and analysis of the implant surface and its interface to bone
Sammanfattning : The ultrastructural and biomechanical properties of the bone-implant interface are important factors for implant performance. For further understanding of the osseointegration process novel tools enabling analysis of the intact interface in high resolution is needed, preferably combined with histology and biomechanical tests. 7. A methodological platform to study molecular biocompatibility of biomaterials. Experimental and clinical studies
Sammanfattning : The aim of this project was to develop a methodological platform in order to advance our scientific understanding of the mechanisms of osseointegration. Screw-shaped, titanium implants, with different surface properties, were inserted in the rat tibia, or incubated in mono- or co-culture of human monocytes and MSCs. LÄS MER
8. On the role of surface properties for implant fixation : From finite element modeling to in vivo studies
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to gain a deeper understanding of the factors contributing to the fixation of bone-anchored implants, especially with regard to surface chemistry, surface topography and implant loading. The methodology used in the thesis ranges from systematic bench studies, computer simulations, experimental in vivo studies, to load cell measurements on patients treated with bone-anchored amputation prostheses. 9. X-ray and neutron μCT of biomedical samples: from image acquisition to quantification
Sammanfattning : Even though the validity of x-ray computed tomography in the analysis of biomedical samples is nowadays undisputed, the more recent imaging techniques and more advanced instruments (such as synchrotrons) are still relatively unknown to many medical doctors that could benefit from them. The doctoral work presented in this thesis joins a collective effort from the imaging community to demonstrate potential applications of advanced x-ray and neutron imaging methods to preclinical medical research, with the hope of contributing to reach a “critical mass” in the medical community and in the public opinion as well. 10. On late complications with HA coated hip arthroplasties
Sammanfattning : 100 hips in 86 patients were operated with a total hip arthroplasty entirely coated with a 155±35 µm thick HA coating, and included in a clinical and radiological follow-up study. The female/male ratio was 75/25, and the mean age was 56 years (32-73). Early clinical results were excellent, especially pain relief. No thigh pain was found. LÄS MER
