  1. 1. Virtual histology by laboratory x-ray phase-contrast tomography

    Författare :Jenny Romell; Hans Hertz; Anna Burvall; Julia Herzen; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Biological and Biomedical Physics; Biologisk och biomedicinsk fysik;

    Sammanfattning : Detailed imaging of biological samples is central to different fields of research, as well as for clinical pathology. Classical histology, using light- orelectron microscopy, can generate high-resolution images but is destructive and only gives two-dimensional information. LÄS MER

  2. 2. High-resolution biomedical phase-contrast tomography

    Författare :William Twengström; Hans Hertz; Anna Burvall; Marco Stampanoni; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; x-ray; x-ray imaging; biomedical; phase contrast; tomography; zebrafish; coronary artery; virtual histology; ring artifacts; phase retrieval; mummy; Fysik; Physics;

    Sammanfattning : Improved three-dimensional biomedical imaging can give a better understanding of tissue structure, growth and diseases. Most present imaging techniques that provide cellular spatial resolution are based on visible or infrared light. These methods cannot image deeper than a millimeter into tissue. LÄS MER

  3. 3. X-ray and neutron μCT of biomedical samples: from image acquisition to quantification

    Författare :Niccoló Peruzzi; Lund Medicinsk strålningsfysik; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; x-ray imaging; neutron imaging; μCT; synchrotron radiation; x-ray phase-contrast; nanoholotomography; x-ray elemental mapping; biomedical applications; virtual histology; biodegradable implants; Mg-alloys; enteric nervous system; peripheral neuropathy; gastroenteric dysmotility; Fysicumarkivet A:2021:Peruzzi;

    Sammanfattning : Even though the validity of x-ray computed tomography in the analysis of biomedical samples is nowadays undisputed, the more recent imaging techniques and more advanced instruments (such as synchrotrons) are still relatively unknown to many medical doctors that could benefit from them.The doctoral work presented in this thesis joins a collective effort from the imaging community to demonstrate potential applications of advanced x-ray and neutron imaging methods to preclinical medical research, with the hope of contributing to reach a “critical mass” in the medical community and in the public opinion as well. 4. 4. Three-dimensional Virtual Histology of Early Vertebrate Scales Revealed by Synchrotron X-ray Phase-contrast Microtomography

    Författare :Qingming Qu; Per Ahlberg; Henning Blom; Moya Smith; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; 3D virtual paleohistology; scales; ontogeny; jawed vertebrates; phylogeny; Biology; Biologi; Earth Science with specialization in Historical Geology and Palaeontology; Geovetenskap med inriktning mot historisk geologi och paleontologi;

    Sammanfattning : Vertebrate hard tissues first appeared in the dermal skeletons of early jawless vertebrates (ostracoderms) and were further modified in the earliest jawed vertebrates. Fortunately, histological information is usually preserved in these early vertebrate fossils and has thus been studied for more than a century, done so by examining thin sections, which provide general information about the specific features of vertebrate hard tissues in their earliest forms. 5. 5. The Origin of Tooth Replacement : Three-dimensional Synchrotron Histology Visualizes the Dental Development of Silurian Stem Osteichthyans

    Författare :Donglei Chen; Per Ahlberg; Zerina Johanson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : Mechanisms of tooth replacement distribute incongruently among extant gnathostomes (jawed vertebrates): a permanent tooth-generating dental lamina exists in chondrichthyans (cartilaginous fish) and tetrapods but not teleosts, whereas tooth shedding by basal hard tissue resorption occurs in tetrapods and teleosts but not chondrichthyans. Theories about the evolution of tooth development have been biased towards the chondrichthyan conveyor-belt replacement, since there has been no fossil evidence for the origin of osteichthyan (bony fish and tetrapods) tooth replacement until now.
