1. Survival of onlay bone grafts. A study in the adult rat
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to study onlay bone grafting in the adult rat to improve graft incorporation and perservation of graft size. In 167 adult isogeneic lewis rats, the size maintenance and bone formation at the graft-host interface of uni- and bicortical onlays positioned in various environments and treatments were investigated. 2. Novel Insights into Inflammatory Disturbed Bone Remodelling
Sammanfattning : Bone is a dynamic tissue that is continuously remodelled, a process that requires equal amounts of osteoclastic bone resorption and osteoblastic bone formation. Inflammation may disturb the equilibrium and result in local and/or systemic bone loss. Negative bone mass balance occurs in several chronic inflammatory diseases, e.g. LÄS MER
3. The Anabolic - Anti-catabolic Paradigm of Augmenting Skeletal Regeneration: A Bone Quality Perspective
Sammanfattning : Successful fracture repair is a complex series of coordinated processes leading to regeneration of new bone to bridge the fracture site, remodelling of the newly formed bone and restoration of skeletal function. Disruption of these processes occurs in approximately 10% of all fractures and leads to delayed or failed healing requiring surgical interventions, increased complication rates, prolonged rehabilitation and high morbidity. 4. Hormone replacement therapy in rheumatoid arthritis
Sammanfattning : Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is 2-3 times more frequent in women as compared to men. The peak incidence in women coincides with the years around the menopause and the course of RA is also influenced by events associated with hormonal alterations. LÄS MER
5. A methodological platform to study molecular biocompatibility of biomaterials. Experimental and clinical studies
Sammanfattning : The aim of this project was to develop a methodological platform in order to advance our scientific understanding of the mechanisms of osseointegration. Screw-shaped, titanium implants, with different surface properties, were inserted in the rat tibia, or incubated in mono- or co-culture of human monocytes and MSCs. LÄS MER
