31. Novel microfluidic based sample preparation methods for rapid separation and detection of viable bacteria from blood for sepsis diagnostics
Sammanfattning : Sepsis is a serious medical condition characterized by a whole-body inflammatory response caused by bloodstream infection. The final stage of sepsis can lead to septic shock, multiple organ failure, and death. In early sepsis, the concentration of bacteria in the bloodstream is typically low, making diagnosis challenging. LÄS MER
32. Health symptoms and potential effects on the blood-brain and blood-cerebrospinal fluid barriers associated with use of wireless telephones
Sammanfattning : Recent years have seen a rapid increase in the use of wireless telephones, yet little systematic data exist on the actual use of such devices in the general population. Mobile and cordless telephones emit radiofrequency fields (RF) raising concern about possible adverse health effects. LÄS MER
33. Factors influencing the risk of diabetic nephropathy : analyses of genes, smoking and diet
Sammanfattning : Diabetic long-term complications, despite intensive treatment, cause serious handicaps at relatively young age in diabetic patients. Diabetic nephropathy (DN) develops in up to 30% of patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D). LÄS MER
34. Prevention of hemolysis as a novel strategy to limit hemoglobin-mediated lipid oxidation in fish - towards a more sustainable use of fish raw materials
Sammanfattning : Hemoglobin (Hb) has been recognized as a main pro-oxidant in fish, causing fast and intense lipid oxidation. This thesis explores the hypothesis that maintaining red blood cells (RBCs) intact for an extended time during fish processing could delay Hb-mediated lipid oxidation. LÄS MER
35. Metabolomics, body composition and fracture
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, I evaluated the impact of pre-centrifugation sample management on the plasma metabolome, providing verification for the protocol used in a study where I applied metabolomics to better understand the role of body composition in fracture occurrence using a large population-based cohort. In paper 1, I applied untargeted liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) metabolomics analysis to plasma samples (n = 471) from healthy donors to predict and evaluate the effect of pre-centrifugation temperature and delay time on metabolomics data using a combination of random forest and generalized linear models.
