26. The use of protein biomarkers in ecotoxicology : Studies of oxidative and genotoxic stress in the blue mussel (Mytilus edulis)
Sammanfattning : Many environmental pollutants, heavy metals and polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) among them, are toxic by oxidative stress. Oxidative stress may be defined as a state in an organism when its inherent capacity to handle oxyradicals is surpassed, and it may result in peroxidation of lipids, and damage to proteins and DNA. 27. Fungal Redox Enzymes Involved in the Oxidation of Organic Pollutants
Sammanfattning : This work describes the degradation of nonylphenol, toxaphene, phenanthrene, benzo[a]pyrene and dyes using fungi and their redox enzymes. Two fungi, Bjerkandera sp. strain BOL13 and Fusarium sp. strain BOL35 were isolated from different geographic area in Bolivia. LÄS MER
28. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons : DNA damage and cell signaling
Sammanfattning : Oxidative stress is a threat to our wellbeing. The formation of reactive oxygen species may result in oxidative lesions in DNA and RNA. When challenging A549 cells with 18O-labeled hydrogen peroxide, we found that RNA was between 14-25 times more sensitive to [18O]-8-oxoGuo formation than [18O]-8-oxodGuo formation in DNA. LÄS MER
29. Sperm Y:X chromosome ratio and androgen response in men exposed to environmental pollutants
Sammanfattning : The last several decades have seen an increase in male infertility concomitant with a decline in the birth sex ratio. The conditions are believed to be linked to increased exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), including the persistent organic pollutants or lifestyle factors e.g. smoking. LÄS MER
30. 32P-postlabelling analysis of complex DNA adducts in human tissues
Sammanfattning : Complex DNA adducts in humans originate from exogenous and endogenous sources. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a large group of chemicals including many potent carcinogens. PAHs are ubiquitously present in the environment and PAH-DNA adducts have been extensively studied in humans. LÄS MER
