16. Macrophage programming and host responses to bacterial infection
Sammanfattning : Macrophages are dynamic, plastic, and heterogeneous immune cells that play an important role in host immune defense against bacterial infection. Various bacterial pathogens, such as Neisseria meningitidis and Mycobacterium tuberculosis, can modulate host immune responses by interfering with macrophage differentiation and polarization. LÄS MER
17. Bacterial display systems for engineering of affinity proteins
Sammanfattning : Directed evolution is a powerful method for engineering of specific affinity proteins such as antibodies and alternative scaffold proteins. For selections from combinatorial protein libraries, robust and high-throughput selection platforms are needed. LÄS MER
18. Experimental bacterial meningitis : studies on immunopathogenesis and immunoregulation
Sammanfattning : Bacterial meningitis is an inflammatory disease of the central nervous system (CNS) which occurs when bacteria gain entry to the subarachnoid space (SAS). Bacterial replication or Iysis leads to the exposure of cell components. LÄS MER
19. Receptor Interactions Between Pathogenic Bacteria and Host Cells
Sammanfattning : This thesis focuses on host and pathogen specific interactions during invasive disease. We have investigated the role and impact of different virulence factors of Neisseria gonorrhoeae, N. meningitidis and Streptococcus pyogenes on host epithelial cells and in vivo. N. LÄS MER
20. B cell activation in vitro: thymus-dependent immune responses and bacterial cell surface proteins
Sammanfattning : In this thesis aspects of peripheral B lymphocyte differentiation were studied. Through in vitro experiments, B lymphocyte activation was assessed. B lymphocytes express immunoglobulin (Ig) specific for a certain antigen on the cell surface, and when surface Ig is crosslinked by an antigen, the cell is activated. LÄS MER
