6. Stability and sorption capacity of montmorillonite colloids : Investigation of size fractional differences and effects of γ-irradiation
Sammanfattning : Bentonite clay is intended to form one of the barriers in most repositories of spent nuclear fuel located in granite. One important function of the bentonite barrier is to retard transport of radionuclides in the event of waste canister failure. Bentonite has a high sorption capacity of cations and its main constituent is montmorillonite. LÄS MER
7. Adhesive Joints in Timber Engineering. Modelling and Testing of Fracture Properties
Sammanfattning : This thesis, which is a compilation of seven papers, concerns the mechanical testing, numerical analysis and constitutive modelling of wood-adhesive bonds in timber engineering. Applications such as finger-joints, glued-laminated timber and glued-in rods are considered. LÄS MER
8. Nanomechanics – Quantum Size Effects, Contacts, and Triboelectricity
Sammanfattning : Nanomechanics is different from the mechanics that we experience in everyday life. At the nano-scale, typically defined as 1 to 100 nanometers, some phenomena are of crucial importance, while the same phenomena can be completely neglected on a larger scale. LÄS MER
9. Anchorage in Concrete Structures : Numerical and Experimental Evaluations of Load-Carrying Capacity of Cast-in-Place Headed Anchors and Post-Installed Adhesive Anchors
Sammanfattning : Various anchorage systems including both cast-in-place and post-installed anchors have been developed for fastening both non-structural and structural components to concrete structures. The need for increased flexibility in the design of new structures and strengthening of existing concrete structures has led to increased use of various metallic anchors in practice. LÄS MER
10. Egg size evolution and paternal care in pipefishes
Sammanfattning : In this thesis I explore how sexual selection, sexual conflicts, coevolution with parental care and an environmental selective agent (hypoxia) affect the evolution of different egg characteristics and embryo survival and size in pipefishes (Syngnathidae). In the broad-nosed pipefish, Syngnathus typhle Linnaeus, both sexes prefer to mate with large partners; large females produce more and larger eggs and large males can care for more young, and, as shown in this thesis, invest more per embryo and provide better oxygenation during brooding.
