  1. 6. Stability and sorption capacity of montmorillonite colloids : Investigation of size fractional differences and effects of γ-irradiation

    Författare :Karin Norrfors; Susanna Wold; Daniel Kaplan; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; montmorillonite; colloids; size effect; γ-irradiation; sorption; colloid stability; radionuclides; montmorillonit; kolloider; storlekseffekt; γ-bestrålning; sorption; kollodial stabilitet; radionuklider; Kemi; Chemistry;

    Sammanfattning : Bentonite clay is intended to form one of the barriers in most repositories of spent nuclear fuel located in granite. One important function of the bentonite barrier is to retard transport of radionuclides in the event of waste canister failure. Bentonite has a high sorption capacity of cations and its main constituent is montmorillonite. LÄS MER

  2. 7. Adhesive Joints in Timber Engineering. Modelling and Testing of Fracture Properties

    Författare :Erik Serrano; Byggnadsmekanik; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; wood; test method; tensile strength; stress distribution; size effect; numerical simulation; laminating effect; laminated beams; joint; glued-laminated timber; glued-in rod; fracture mechanics; finite element method; finger-joint; experiment; damage; constitutive modelling; adhesive; bending strength; Environmental technology; pollution control; Miljöteknik; kontroll av utsläpp; Construction technology; Anläggningsteknik; Material technology; Materiallära; materialteknik;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis, which is a compilation of seven papers, concerns the mechanical testing, numerical analysis and constitutive modelling of wood-adhesive bonds in timber engineering. Applications such as finger-joints, glued-laminated timber and glued-in rods are considered. LÄS MER

  3. 8. Nanomechanics – Quantum Size Effects, Contacts, and Triboelectricity

    Författare :Martin Olsen; Jonas Örtegren; Håkan Olin; Per Gradin; Peter Glans; Rusen Yang; Mittuniversitetet; []
    Nyckelord :triboelectricity; adatom; ion; charge; mound; quantum size effect; triboelctric nanogenerator; TENG; wind driven; contact; nanomechanics; fri electron model; nanowire cantilever;

    Sammanfattning : Nanomechanics is different from the mechanics that we experience in everyday life. At the nano-scale, typically defined as 1 to 100 nanometers, some phenomena are of crucial importance, while the same phenomena can be completely neglected on a larger scale. LÄS MER

  4. 9. Anchorage in Concrete Structures : Numerical and Experimental Evaluations of Load-Carrying Capacity of Cast-in-Place Headed Anchors and Post-Installed Adhesive Anchors

    Författare :Rasoul Nilforoush; Lennart Elfgren; Norbert Randl; Karin Lundgren; Manouchehr Hassanzadeh; Richard Malm; Lars-Erik Persson; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Headed anchor; Anchor bolt; Adhesive anchor; Concrete cone breakout; Concrete splitting; Pullout loading; Size effect; Member thickness; Anchor head size; Orthogonal surface reinforcement; Concrete Strength; High-strength concrete; Cracked concrete; Steel fiber-reinforced concrete; Sustained loading; Creep behavior; Structural Engineering; Konstruktionsteknik;

    Sammanfattning : Various anchorage systems including both cast-in-place and post-installed anchors have been developed for fastening both non-structural and structural components to concrete structures. The need for increased flexibility in the design of new structures and strengthening of existing concrete structures has led to increased use of various metallic anchors in practice. LÄS MER

  5. 10. Egg size evolution and paternal care in pipefishes

    Författare :Inês Braga Gonçalves; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Egg size; embryo development; embryo survival; hypoxia; male quality; mate choice; mating constraints; oxygen; parental care; parental effects; paternal care; reproductive compensation; sex-role reversal; sexual conflict; Syngnathidae; Syngnathus typhle;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis I explore how sexual selection, sexual conflicts, coevolution with parental care and an environmental selective agent (hypoxia) affect the evolution of different egg characteristics and embryo survival and size in pipefishes (Syngnathidae). In the broad-nosed pipefish, Syngnathus typhle Linnaeus, both sexes prefer to mate with large partners; large females produce more and larger eggs and large males can care for more young, and, as shown in this thesis, invest more per embryo and provide better oxygenation during brooding.
