1. Antibiotic resistance and pathogenesis of Streptococci with focus on Group A Streptococci
Sammanfattning : Multi-drug resistant (MDR) infections remain the leading cause of death worldwide. MDR infections caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae (Spn), Streptococcus pyogenes (GAS) and Streptococcus agalactiae (GBS) are considered global threats to human health due to increased spread of antibiotic resistance and limited treatment options. 2. Bacterial colonization of the neonatal bowel and ileal pouch with focus on E. coli
Sammanfattning : The colonic microbiota is a source of inflammatogenic and potentially pathogenic bacteria, but also a source of immune maturation signals to the infant. Here, we have investigated the normal colonic microbiota, with focus on E. coli in Swedish and Pakistani newborn infants, as well as the microbiota of the ileo-anal pouch in colectomized patients. 3. Homotopy Theory and TDA with a View Towards Category Theory
Sammanfattning : This thesis contains three papers. Paper A and Paper B deal with homotopy theory and Paper C deals with Topological Data Analysis. All three papers are written from a categorical point of view.In Paper A we construct categories of short hammocks and show that their weak homotopy type is that of mapping spaces. LÄS MER
4. Inequality, Health, and Smoking
Sammanfattning : This thesis consists of five self-contained, yet related, research papers, which all contribute to the economic literature on socioeconomic differences in health and health related behavior. The first two papers provide a compass in the discussion of how to measure health inequality and, more specifically, how to adjust measures and concepts when moving from an unbounded income variable to a bounded (or binary) health variable. 5. A step forward in using QSARs for regulatory hazard and exposure assessment of chemicals
Sammanfattning : According to the REACH regulation chemicals produced or imported to the European Union need to be assessed to manage the risk of potential hazard to human health and the environment. An increasing number of chemicals in commerce prompts the need for utilizing faster and cheaper alternative methods for this assessment, such as quantitative structure-activity or property relationships (QSARs or QSPRs).
