1. Gender and representation : investigations of bias in natural language processing
Sammanfattning : Natural Language Processing (NLP) technologies are a part of our every day realities. They come in forms we can easily see as ‘language technologies’ (auto-correct, translation services, search results) as well as those that fly under our radar (social media algorithms, 'suggested reading' recommendations on news sites, spam filters). 2. Exploring natural language processing for single-word and multi-word lexical complexity from a second language learner perspective
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, we investigate how natural language processing (NLP) tools and techniques can be applied to vocabulary aimed at second language learners of Swedish in order to classify vocabulary items into different proficiency levels suitable for learners of different levels. In the first part, we use feature-engineering to represent words as vectors and feed these vectors into machine learning algorithms in order to (1) learn CEFR labels from the input data and (2) predict the CEFR level of unseen words. 3. A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words: Natural Language Processing in Context
Sammanfattning : Modern NLP models learn language from lexical co-occurrences. While this method has allowed for significant breakthroughs, it has also exposed potential limitations of modern NLP methods. For example, NLP models are prone to hallucinate, represent a biased world view and may learn spurious correlations to solve the data instead of the task at hand. LÄS MER
4. Improving Language Models Using Augmentation and Multi-Modality
Sammanfattning : Language models have become a core component in modern Natural Language Processing (NLP) as they constitute a powerful base that is easily adaptable to many language processing tasks. Part of the strength lies in their ability to embed associations representing general world knowledge. LÄS MER
5. Resources and Applications for Dialectal Arabic: the Case of Levantine
Sammanfattning : This is a thesis about the computational study of Dialectal Arabic (DA). In particular, the thesis studies DA, with a special emphasis on Levantine Arabic, and develops tools and resources for the computational study of Dialectal Arabic Natural Language Processing (DANLP). LÄS MER
