41. Nicotinic effects on midbrain dopamine neurons : a dual mechanism of action
Sammanfattning : The neurons of the mesocorticolimbic dopamine system are located in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) in the mesencephalon and send their projections to forebrain structures, such as the prefrontal cortex, the amygdala and the nucleus accumbens. The dopamine system is important in regulating mood and motivation as well as cognitive function and appear to be primarily involved in drug dependence, since most drugs abused by man stimulate this system. 42. Pathophysiology of subarachnoid hemorrhage in the rat
Sammanfattning : Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) causes brain damage, but the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. An obstacle in SAH research is the lack of an adequate animal model. In this thesis, we developed a new approach to simulate SAH that involves the injection of blood into the prechiasmatic cistern of the rat. LÄS MER
43. Importance of endogenous kynurenic acid in brainm catecholaminergic processes and in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia
Sammanfattning : Kynurenic acid is a metabolite of tryptophan and the only known naturally occurring NMethylD-Aspartic acid (NMDA)-receptor antagonist (at the co-agonist glycine site) in the human brain. The aim of the present work was to investigate the physiological and pharmacological significance of endogenous kynurenic acid as well as its putative pathophysiological implications. LÄS MER
44. Schizophrenia and Nitric Oxide: Deficits in Information Processing Invetigated in Animal Models
Sammanfattning : Rationale: Schizophrenia-like symptoms can be induced in humans by phencyclidine (PCP), a non-competitive antagonist of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor. Schizophrenic patients and PCP-treated animals display deficits in pre-attentive information processing, as assessed by e.g. prepulse inhibition of the acoustic startle response. LÄS MER
45. Genomic clues to secondary injury mechanisms in brain trauma
Sammanfattning : Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a heterogenous disease that can lead to persistent disability or death. The immediate mechanical disruption of brain tissue is followed by a phase of secondary brain injury. During this phase TBI challenges clinical interventions due to its complexity. LÄS MER
