  1. 1. Ecology across Boundaries : Food web coupling among and within ecosystems

    Författare :Pia Bartels; Peter Eklöv; Lars J. Tranvik; Daniel E. Schindler; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; cross-ecosystem; food web; habitat coupling; terrestrial-aquatic linkages; subsidy; allochthonous; lake ecosystem; population divergence; trait variation; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestrisk; limnisk och marin ekologi; Freshwater ecology; Limnisk ekologi; Biology; Biologi; Biologi med inriktning mot limnologi; Biology with specialization in Limnology;

    Sammanfattning : Cross-boundary movements of energy and material are ubiquitous. Freshwater ecosystems receive nutrients, dissolved, and particulate organic matter from adjacent terrestrial ecosystems, whereas terrestrial ecosystems mainly receive prey organisms and detritus deposited by physical processes such as floods from freshwater ecosystems. 2. 2. Thiamin (vitamin B1) in the aquatic food web

    Författare :Emil Fridolfsson; Samuel Hylander; Michael T. Brett; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; phytoplankton; zooplankton; thiamin; transfer; food web dynamics; micronutrient; vitamin; Baltic Sea; community composition; M74; salmon; B1; växtplankton; djurplankton; tiamin; överföring; födoväv; mikronäringsämne; vitamin; Östersjön; B1; lax; Ecology; Ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : Thiamin (vitamin B1) is required for several life-sustaining processes in most organisms and cells, e.g. in the conversion of food to energy. It also serves as an antioxidant and is important for proper nerve signaling. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Dynamics of astaxanthin, tocopherol (Vitamin E) and thiamine (Vitamin B1) in the Baltic Sea ecosystem : Bottom-up effects in an aquatic food web

    Författare :Norbert Häubner; Pauli Snoeijs; Jon Ågren; Rhena Schumann; Markku Viitasalo; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Baltic Sea; carotenoids; astaxanthin; tocopherols; Vitamin E; thiamine; Vitamin B1; pelagic food web; eutrophication; M74; phytoplankton; zooplankton; sprat; Sprattus sprattus balticus; herring; Clupea harengus; salmon; Salmo salar; cod; Gadus morhua; High Performance Liquid Chromatography HPLC ; electrochemical detection ECD ;

    Sammanfattning : The thesis combines laboratory experiments and field expeditions to study production, transfer and consumption of non-enzymatic antioxidants and thiamine in an aquatic food web. In particular, I (1) documented spatial and seasonal variation of tocopherols and carotenoids in the Baltic Sea pelagic food web, and (2) examined the effects of abiotic and biotic factors on tocopherol, carotenoid and thiamine concentrations in phytoplankton, zooplankton and fish. 4. 4. Direct and indirect effects of fish predation and excretion in aquatic food webs

    Författare :José Luiz Attayde; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; marine biology; Hydrobiology; zooplankton; resilience; predation; phytoplankton; nutrient enrichment; nutrient recycling; interaction strength; herbivory; food webs; food chain; excretion; fish; detritus; detritivory; aquatic ecology; limnology; Marinbiologi; limnologi; akvatisk ekologi; Ecology; Ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to elucidate the mechanisms by which planktivorous fish can affect planktonic communities in lakes and how they may affect benthic communities through their effects on planktonic communities. In a laboratory experiment, nutrients released by fish increased algal biomass and altered phytoplankton community structure, suggesting that fish can affect phytoplankton by directly releasing nutrients. 5. 5. The role of allelopathy in microbial food webs

    Författare :Astrid Weissbach; Catherine Legrand; Ellen Van Donk; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Microbial food web; Allelopathy; Alexandrium tamarense; Prymnesium parvum; Infochemicals; marine plankton community; Freshwater ecology; Limnisk ekologi; Akvatisk ekologi; Aquatic Ecology;

    Sammanfattning : Phytoplankton produce allelochemicals; excreted chemical substances that are affecting other microorganisms in their direct environment.In my thesis, I investigated strain specific variability in the expression of allelochemicals of the harmful flagellate Prymnesium parvum, that is euryhaline but mainly bloom forming in brackish water.
