  1. 1. Macroalgae in tropical seascapes : regulating factors and functions in the coastal ecosystem

    Författare :Gustaf Lilliesköld Sjöö; Max Troell; Nils Kautsky; Lena Kautsky; Alina Szmant; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Macroalgae; Coral reefs; Nutrients; Herbivory; Ecological functions; East Africa; Regulating factors; Anthropogenic influence; Seaweed farming; Bioindicator; marin ekotoxikologi; Marine Ecotoxicology;

    Sammanfattning : Although macroalgae usually are inconspicuous on pristine coral reefs, they often thrive on reefs that are subjected to various types of anthropogenic disturbance. This thesis consists of five papers and investigates how biomass and composition of macroalgal communities on coral reefs are affected by regulating factors, such as nutrient availability, herbivory, substrate availability and hydrodynamic forces. 2. 2. Forests, Functions, and Food Webs : Riparian processes through an ecological and molecular lens

    Författare :Jeffery Marker; Eva Bergman; Rolf Lutz Eckstein; Denis Lafage; Rachel E. Bowes; Ann Erlandsson; John S. Richardson; Karlstads universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Riparian systems; functional diversity; stable isotope analysis; metabarcoding; Tetragnathidae; Lycosidae; forestry management; prey subsidies; Biology; Biologi;

    Sammanfattning : Riparian systems are critical ecological interfaces that have a significant impact on the surrounding aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. The riparian and surrounding systems have significant roles in regulating energy flow, providing essential nutrients, and supporting unique species, making them important for ecosystem function. 3. 3. Evolutionary consequences of ecological interactions

    Författare :Etsuko Nonaka; Åke Brännström; Göran Englund; Richard Svanbäck; Per Lundberg; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; adaptive dynamics; eco-evolutionary dynamics; ecological speciation; ecosystem; individual based; population dynamics; phenotypic plasticity; predator-prey; sexual selection;

    Sammanfattning : Eco-evolutionary dynamics integrates the reciprocal interactions betweenecology and evolution. These two branches of biology traditionally assumethe other as static for simplicity. However, increasing evidence shows thatthis simplification may not always hold because ecology and evolution canoperate in similar timescales. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Managing the Urban Greens : Maintaining ecological functions in human dominated landscapes

    Författare :Erik Andersson; Thomas Elmqvist; Jon Sadler; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; Natural Resources Management; naturresurshushållning;

    Sammanfattning : At the core of this thesis lie two realisations: First, like other ecosystems, those in urban landscapes provide humans with a number of ecosystem services, some recognized while others are not. Second, in cities just as in other intensively used social-ecological systems, management is of central importance. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Making complex commons work : identifying critical social-ecological factors and mechanisms for sustainable ecosystem management

    Författare :Caroline Schill; Therese Lindahl; Björn Vollan; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Agent-based modelling; Behavioural experiments; Collective action; Common-pool resources; Cooperation; Ecological complexity; Knowledge sharing; Regime shifts; Social-ecological systems; Sustainable management; Thresholds; Uncertainty; Sustainability Science; vetenskap om hållbar utveckling;

    Sammanfattning : Collective action holds the key to many sustainability challenges, from local to global scales. Whether it is to manage community-based fisheries or take action against climate change or biodiversity loss – the question on how to overcome the conflict between individual and collective interests (i.e. LÄS MER
