   Sammanfattning : The prevalence of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) exhibits considerable variation across agrarian societies, whereas they are virtually absent in non-agrarian societies such as hunter-gatherer and horticultural societies.    Sammanfattning : Proceeding from land degradation and soil fertility decline in sub-Saharan African smallholder agriculture and drawing on empirical research with smallholder farmers in Tororo district in south-eastern Uganda (2010-2012), this thesis identifies local collective strategies in response to changing livelihood conditions. In an attempt to co-produce knowledge with a transformative potential, the thesis also illustrates how action research can be employed to envision, implement and evaluate a locally anchored practice to improve soil fertility, namely the use of human urine as a crop fertilizer.    Sammanfattning : Avhandlingen syftar till att fördjupa förståelsen av landsbygdens trädgård som “åkerbrukets blomma” eller förebild för jordbruket, genom att analysera sambanden mellan trädgård och jordbruk under 1800-talet med utgångspunkt i uppbyggnaden av två mönstergårdar i Skåne. Avhandlingen hävdar att mönstergården i allmänhet, särskilt under dess uppbyggnadsperiod, utgör ett rikt material för studier av det mångdimensionella förhållandet mellan trädgård och jordbruk.
