  1. 11. Exploring natural language processing for single-word and multi-word lexical complexity from a second language learner perspective

    Författare :David Alfter; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; natural language processing; lexical complexity; CEFR; second language learning; machine learning; crowdsourcing;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis, we investigate how natural language processing (NLP) tools and techniques can be applied to vocabulary aimed at second language learners of Swedish in order to classify vocabulary items into different proficiency levels suitable for learners of different levels. In the first part, we use feature-engineering to represent words as vectors and feed these vectors into machine learning algorithms in order to (1) learn CEFR labels from the input data and (2) predict the CEFR level of unseen words. 2. 12. The Acquisition of Russian in a Language Contact Situation : A Case Study of a Bilingual Child in Sweden

    Författare :Natalia Ringblom; Milan Bily; Stella Ceytlin; Maria Voeikova; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Language acquisition; childhood bilingualism; bilingual first language acquisition; language contact; language separation; input; dominance; mother tongue; Russian; Swedish; weaker language; Sweden; slaviska språk; Slavic Languages;

    Sammanfattning : This case study investigates the acquisition of Russian in a language contact situation. It examines a simultaneous Swedish-Russian bilingual child born and raised in Sweden. Qualitative analysis is provided from age 1;4 to 8;5 focusing especially on the earliest stages (before the end of the critical period at 4;5). LÄS MER

  3. 13. A View from Language : Growth of language in individuals and populations

    Författare :Christer Johansson; Allmän språkvetenskap; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Scandinavia; psycho-linguistics; past tense; linguistic ecology; language variation; language change; language acquisition; evolution; epidemics; emergence; diffusion; connectionism; area linguistics; case; simulation; synthesis.; Linguistics; Lingvistik;

    Sammanfattning : The main question that this book tries to find answers to is what it is that makes language learnable. Language is one of the most complex human activities, but nearly 100% of humanity have learned a language in childhood. One answer could be that it is something in our brain that makes us learn language better than most other activities. LÄS MER

  4. 14. Cross-language Ontology Learning : Incorporating and Exploiting Cross-language Data in the Ontology Learning Process

    Författare :Hans Hjelm; Martin Volk; Joakim Nivre; Philipp Cimiano; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ontologies; Ontology learning; Distributional semantics; Knowledge acquisition; Text mining; Computational linguistics; Datorlingvistik; datorlingvistik; Computational Linguistics;

    Sammanfattning : An ontology is a knowledge-representation structure, where words, terms or concepts are defined by their mutual hierarchical relations. Ontologies are becoming ever more prevalent in the world of natural language processing, where we currently see a tendency towards using semantics for solving a variety of tasks, particularly tasks related to information access. 5. 15. Deictic Demonstratives in Japanese, Finnish and Swedish : First and Third Language Perspectives

    Författare :Mitsuyo Kuwano Lidén; Gunilla Lindberg-Wada; Päivi Juvonen; Peter af Trampe; Keiko Yoshioka; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Japanese; Finnish; Swedish; spatial-deictically used demonstratives; interlanguage; third-language learning; Japanology; japanologi;

    Sammanfattning : The goal of this thesis is twofold. Firstly, it investigates the actual, native use of spatial-deictic demonstratives in Japanese, Finnish and Swedish. LÄS MER
