  1. 11. Analysis of deep brain stimulation and ablative lesions in surgical treatment of movement disorders : with emphasis on safety aspects

    Författare :Patric Blomstedt; Bengt Linderoth; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; deep brain stimulation; pallidotomy; thalamotomy; complications; Parkinson s disease; essential tremor; Clinical Neurophysiology; klinisk neurofysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Background The last decade has witnessed a renaissance of functional stereotactic neurosurgery in the treatment of patients with movement disorders, especially advanced Parkinson’s disease (PD), essential tremor (ET) and dystonia. Ablative lesions such as thalamotomy and pallidotomy have been gradually replaced by the technique of chronic deep brain stimulation (DBS) applied to targets in the basal ganglia and thalamus, and assumed to be more lenient to the brain than stereotactic radiofrequency lesions. 2. 12. Microelectrode cluster technology for precise interactions with neuronal circuits. Towards highly specific adaptive deep brain stimulation

    Författare :Mohsin Mohammed; Neuronano Research Center (NRC); []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Neuro-electronic interfaceneural interface; neural interface; tissue reactions; deep brain stimulation; Adaptive DBS; biocompatibility; implantation method; neurosurgical tool;

    Sammanfattning : Neuro-electronic interfaces, which can be used for stable communication between neurons-computers over long periods of time, would be valuable for understanding and interacting with the nervous system. A major challenge has been to overcome the tissue reactions towards implanted electrodes. LÄS MER

  3. 13. Deep brain stimulation targeting the caudal zona incerta as a treatment for parkinsonian and essential tremor

    Författare :Rasmus Stenmark Persson; Patric Blomstedt; Sara af Bjerkén; Marwan Hariz; Anders Fytagoridis; Alfonso Fasano; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; movement disorders; parkinson s disease; tremor; essential tremor; deep brain stimulation; zona incerta; posterior subthalamic area; Neurology; neurologi; neurokirurgi; Neurosurgery;

    Sammanfattning : Background: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is used as a treatment for Parkinson’s disease (PD) and Essential tremor (ET) when medications are insufficient. The most common DBS-targets for PD and ET, the subthalamic nucleus (STN) and the ventral intermediate nucleus of the thalamus (Vim) respectively, have certain side effects and limitations. LÄS MER

  4. 14. Deep Brain Stimulation in Parkinson's disease and essential tremor Outcome and experiences from patients' and spouses' perspectives

    Författare :Anna Lena Törnqvist; Neurokirurgi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; goal attainment; speech; social life; spouses; Neurologi; neurophysiology; Neurology; Parkinson s disease; neurofysiologi; neuropsykologi; Deep Brain Stimulation; essential tremor; neuropsychology;

    Sammanfattning : The treatment related effects and personalized goal fulfilment of Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) have been assessed in studies with different designs. The brain targets included the thalamus for medically intractable tremor in Parkinson's disease (PD) or essential tremor (ET) and the subthalamicus for reducing hypo-, bradykinesia, tremor, rigidity and dystonia in PD. 5. 15. Mathematical modeling for optimization of Deep Brain Stimulation

    Författare :Rubén Cubo; Alexander Medvedev; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Elektroteknik med inriktning mot reglerteknik; Electrical Engineering with specialization in Automatic Control;

    Sammanfattning : Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) consists of sending mild electric stimuli to the brain via a chronically implanted lead. The therapy is used to alleviate the symptoms of different neurological diseases, such as Parkinson's Disease. However, its underlying biological mechanism is currently unknown. LÄS MER
