31. Salvage and de novo synthesis of nucleotides in Trypanosoma brucei and mammalian cells
Sammanfattning : All living cells are dependent on nucleic acids for their survival. The genetic information stored in DNA is translated into functional proteins via a messenger molecule, the ribonucleic acid (RNA). Since DNA and RNA can be considered as polymers of nucleotides (NTPs), balanced pools of NTPs are crucial to nucleic acid synthesis and repair. LÄS MER
32. Exploring novel roles of metabolic enzymes MTHFD2 and PFKFB3 in cancer genome stability and their potential as anticancer therapeutic targets
Sammanfattning : Altered tumor metabolism has been described as early as the 1920s, but it was only in recent decades that proteomic and metabolomic studies revealed that the ways in which tumors rewire their nutrient and energy pathways are more diverse and have more implications for treatment outcome than previously thought. There is now a great interest in characterizing promising metabolic targets and identifying novel ways by which to exploit them for cancer treatment. LÄS MER
33. The effect of chronic alcoholism on epigenetic patterns regulating gene expression and neurodegeneration in the human brain
Sammanfattning : Chronic alcoholism causes about 3.2% of all deaths worldwide. It has an association to about 60 different diseases and injuries with enormous social and economical impact. Despite these facts, very few pharmacological treatments exist and we can still not explain the mechanisms behind addiction, craving and cognitive impairments seen in the abuser. LÄS MER
34. Novel therapeutic targets in pediatric neural tumors
Sammanfattning : The embryonal tumors neuroblastoma and medulloblastoma are two of the most common and deadliest tumors in childhood. Both are heterogeneous tumors that arise in the peripheral and central nervous system, respectively. LÄS MER
35. Retroviral and related nucleic acid processing enzymes expression and detection : Applications on clinical studies of HIV and HERVs
Sammanfattning : Reverse transcriptase (RT), the expression and detection of the enzyme marking the family Retroviridae, has been studied. A new RT activity assay adapted to 96-well microtitre plates is described. It uses a non- radioactive bromodeoxyuridine triphosphate (BrdUTP) substrate in a solid phase format. The assay was highly sensitive. LÄS MER
