1. Juvenile birch in Sweden : Selected stem characteristics for interior and furniture applications
Sammanfattning : In response to the furniture industry’s growing demand for raw material, large volumes of juvenile silver birch and downy birch stems available from pre-commercial thinning operations in Sweden’s forests could offer solutions. However, such stems are not currently used on an industrial scale, and most research conducted on birch stems in general has neither focussed on young trees nor the potential use of the central stem part around the tree pith. 2. Wood hydrolysate Barriers
Sammanfattning : Wood hemicellulose is an abundant but fairly unexploited renewable feedstock. Recent studies have shown that hemicelluloses have a large potential for use in the food packaging industry as a sustainable alternative to the conventional oxygen-barrier materials used today. LÄS MER
3. Surface modification of birch and acetylated birch wood by silicone nanofilaments
Sammanfattning : The increasing awareness of sustainability motivates the development of building materials from renewable resources. The requirements of wood-based products with improved durability, for example, enhanced liquid repellence and UV and biological resistance, are still a challenge. LÄS MER
4. Wood Hemicelluloses - Fundamental Insights on Biological and Technical Properties
Sammanfattning : Hemicelluloses are a group of heterogeneous polysaccharides representing around 30 % of wood where the dominating types are xylans, glucomannans and xyloglucans. Hemicelluloses complex molecular structure makes it difficult to understand the relationship between structure and properties entirely, and their biological role is not yet fully verified. LÄS MER
5. Birch Stem and Wood Traits in Genetic and Silviculture Trials in Southern Sweden
Sammanfattning : Swedish tree species of birch (silver: Betula pendula and downy: B. pubescens) are often neglected during forest management activities, resulting in low value logs. This thesis investigated birch stem characteristics and wood properties important for solid wood products, in genetics and management trials in southern Sweden. LÄS MER
