  1. 11. Changes in bone mass and skeletal structure in the postmenopausal period

    Författare :Henrik Ahlborg; Ortopedi - klinisk och molekylär osteoporosforskning; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; orthopaedics; Surgery; hormone replacement therapy.; physical activity; bone strength; bone size; bone loss; longitudinal; Menopause; bone mineral density; traumatology; Kirurgi; ortopedi; traumatologi;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to evaluate long-term changes in bone mass and skeletal structure in the forearm in the peri- and postmenopausal period. 156 premenopausal women, at baseline aged 48 years, not taking medications and without disease processes known to interfere with bone metabolism, were followed through menopause by measurements of bone mass and skeletal structure at the cortical site of the distal radius by single photon absorptiometry, on average every second year until age 72. 2. 12. Gene regulation, intracellular signaling and membrane traffic : studies in primary human skeletal muscle cultures

    Författare :Lubna Al-Khalili; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Skeletal muscle cultures; insulin signal transduction; glucose transport; GLUT4; RNAi; Na ; K -ATPase; MEF2;

    Sammanfattning : Skeletal muscle is an insulin sensitive organ and plays a major role in whole body electrolyte and substrate homeostasis in the post prandial state. Impaired insulin action in skeletal muscle may lead to the pathological condition of insulin resistance. LÄS MER

  3. 13. Applications of microdialysis in studies of the adrenergic regulation of lipolysis in human skeletal muscle and adipose tissue

    Författare :Staffan Enoksson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Human; in vivo; microdialysis; ethanol technique; lipolysis; blood flow; microcirculation; skeletal muscle; adipose tissue; adrenoceptors; insulin; forskolin; adenylyl cyclase; phosphodiesterases; glycerol; lactate.;

    Sammanfattning : Lipolysis, i.e., hydrolysis of triaeylglycerol to free fatty acids and glycerol, is a central process in lipid metabolism, and the regulation of lipid metabolism is altered in several common disorders, such as diabetes, obesity and atherosclerosis. LÄS MER

  4. 14. A novel single skeletal muscle cell in vitro motility assay : effects of aging and non-enzymatic glycosylation on myosin function

    Författare :Peter Höök; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :In vitro motility; motility speed; aging; single muscle fiber; myosin isoform; temperature; scaling; glycation;

    Sammanfattning : The aims of this study were to develop a single skeletal muscle fiber in vitro motility assay, and to employ the assay in order to study the effects of aging and non-enzymatic glycosylation on the mechanical properties of the motor protein myosin in an attempt to improve our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying the aging-related impairment in regulation of muscle function. Myosin was extracted from a millimeter short single muscle fiber segment directly onto a nitrocellulosecoated coverslip for subsequent analyses of the functional properties of the motor protein. 5. 15. Metastatic bone disease

    Författare :Rikard Wedin; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :cytology; epidemiology; metastatic bone disease; pathologic fracture; prognosis; radiotherapy; skeletal metastasis; surgical therapy; survival; MIB; p53; ER; PgR;

    Sammanfattning : Aim: To evaluate epidemiology, prognosis and diagnostics in metastatic bone disease and identify risk factors for failure after operation for pathologic fracture. Patients: The study was based on patients treated for skeletal metastases, myeloma or lymphoma between 1986 and 1998 at the Oncology Service, Department of Orthopedics, Karolinska Hospital and on patients diagnosed with symptomatic skeletal metastases 1989-1994 in the Stockholm Region.
