1. Restoration of semi-natural grasslands : Impacts on biodiversity, ecosystem services and stakeholder perceptions
Sammanfattning : Humans play a major role shaping the living conditions for not only ourselves, but also all other species on Earth. In fact, some species-rich habitat types require human management to uphold the biodiversity and related ecosystem services. LÄS MER
2. Grassland restoration : Connectivity, plant community change and cows
Sammanfattning : The ecological significance of semi-natural grasslands is high because these habitats provide a home for a diverse flora and fauna and support a range of associated ecosystem services. Due to large-scale land-use changes the extent of grassland habitat has declined. LÄS MER
3. Remote sensing of grassland communities : integrated effects of soil nutrients and habitat age
Sammanfattning : Semi-natural grasslands are characterized by high fine-scale plant species richness. The richest grassland communities, with many habitat-specialist species, are found in ancient grassland sites that have a long continuity of grazing management and low levels of soil nutrients. Grazed grasslands were widespread in the historical landscape. LÄS MER
4. Conservation of semi-natural grasslands : Effects of different management methods on biodiversity
Sammanfattning : Species-rich semi-natural grassland are valuable habitats in the agricultural landscape as they may contain a high diversity of both plant and animal species, as well as provide essential ecosystem services like pollination. To keep these habitats open and to maintain the biodiversity in them, management like grazing or mowing is necessary. LÄS MER
5. Biological diversity values in semi-natural grasslands : indicators, landscape context and restoration
Sammanfattning : Semi-natural grasslands, which are a declining and fragmented habitat in Europe, contain a high biodiversity, and are therefore of interest to conservation. This thesis examines how plant diversity is influenced by the landscape context, and how plant and fungal diversity can be targeted by practical conservation using indicator species and congruence between species groups.
