1. Environmental influences on the behavioural ecology of juvenile salmonids – the importance of rearing density
Sammanfattning : Background and aims: Early environmental conditions are known to influence the phenotypic development of animals, including behavioural alterations. The overall aim of this thesis is to investigate the effects of density, social stability and structural complexity on growth, behaviour, and survival in the wild, using juvenile brown trout (Salmo trutta) and Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) as model species. 2. Fish coping with stress-Physiology and behaviour in salmonids with focus on stress coping styles, rearing conditions and smolt migration
Sammanfattning : When animals are reared for conservational releases it is paramount to avoid reducing genetic and phenotypic variation over time. Therefore, an understanding of how behavioural and physiological traits affect the performance of an individual both within the captive and the wild environment is required. LÄS MER
3. Modeling Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and brown trout (Salmo trutta) responses to river habitat alteration
Sammanfattning : Half the world’s river volume is affected by flow alterations and/or fragmentation, a figure that is likely to increase with the current global surge in hydropower development. At the same time, freshwater biodiversity is in rapid decline. LÄS MER
4. Maternal Separation in Rats : An Experimental Model for Long-Term Effects of Early Life Experiences on Neurochemistry, Voluntary Ethanol Intake and Exploration and Risk Assessment Behavior
Sammanfattning : The period of early life is important for the development of individual brain function and behavior. Human studies have shown altered vulnerability to develop psychopathology and/or excessive drug intake, possibly leading to dependence, as a consequence of early life experiences. LÄS MER
5. Brewer’s yeast as a protein source in the diet of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and freshwater prawns (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) reared in a clear water or biofloc environment
Sammanfattning : This thesis investigated the effects of dietary protein replacement of fishmeal or soybean meal with spent brewer’s yeast (SBY) in farmed tilapia and giant freshwater prawns. The effect of rearing tilapia and prawn in two different rearing systems, clear water recirculating aquaculture system (CW-RAS) and biofloc recirculating aquaculture system (Bio-RAS), were also investigated.
