  1. 1. The role of exercise and exercise-related factors in the control of mitochondrial oxidative function

    Författare :Brandon Walsh; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Skinned fibers; permeabilized fibers; skeletal muscle; exercise; mitochondria; ADP sensitivity; aerobic metabolism; training; eccentric; high intensity; creatine; phosphocreatine; inorganic phosphate; hydrogen ions;

    Sammanfattning : The effects of exercise and exercise-related factors on the control of mitochondrial oxidative function were investigated in human and rat skeletal muscle. Oxidative function was assessed through the measurement of oxygen consumption in chemically permeabilized (skinned) fibers. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Metabolic signals in the regulation of insulin release

    Författare :Jude T Deeney; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :insulin-secreting cells; glucose metabolism; ATP ADP ratio; cytoplasmic free Ca2 concentration; long-chain acyl-CoA; protein kinase C; insulin secretion; serotonin release; permeabilized cells; intracellular Ca2 handling; exocytosis;

    Sammanfattning : In the present thesis, an attempt was made to elucidate the role of some of the glucose-induced intracellular metabolic effector signals in insulin secretion and to develop new applications that will enable further investigations of oscillatory signalling and secretion from pancreatic ß-cells. The sequence of early metabolic and ionic events was examined in clonal pancreatic insulin secreting cells (HIT) in response to glucose stimulation. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Skeletal muscle fiber types in man : With special reference to anabolic signaling and mitochondrial bioenergetics

    Författare :Sebastian Edman; William Apro; Filip J Larsen; Abram Katz; Leigh Breen; Gymnastik- och idrottshögskolan; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; mTORC1; THRIFTY; fiber type identification; muscle growth; aging; sarcopenia; mitochondrial function; oxphos; metabolism; Medicin Teknik; Medicine Technology;

    Sammanfattning : Human skeletal muscle consists of a mixture of slow-twitch (type I) and fast-twitch (type II) fibers. The type I fibers are endurance-oriented, with a metabolic system and infrastructure that supports aerobic metabolism. LÄS MER
