1. Ventilation of the Paranasal Sinuses. A study using the 133-Xenon Washout Technique
Sammanfattning : A noninvasive 133-xenon washout technique was used to evaluate the ventilation of the paranasal sinuses in healthy subjects and in patients with sinus disease. A mixture of air and 133-xenon is insufflated into the nasal cavities and passage into the sinuses is facilitated by a pressure increase created by letting the subjects inflate a balloon. LÄS MER
2. Adrenergic control of small intestinal motility and blood flow : an experimental study in rat and man
Sammanfattning : Small intestinal motility in the fasted state is characterized by migrating motor complexes (MMCs). Both animals and man exhibit the MMC, which consists of periods of regular contractions, i.e. activity fronts, that migrate along the length of the small bowel and alternate with periods of quiescence. This type of rhinitis may develop at any time during pregnancy and the nasal stuffiness usually disappears shortly after delivery. This condition is troublesome and can interfere with sleep, induce tiredness and dryness of the mouth. LÄS MER
4. Functional Models in the Search for Pharmacological Treatment of Urinary Incontinence : The Role of Adrenergic, Cholinergic, and Serotonergic Receptors
Sammanfattning : Stress incontinence and overactive bladder are disorders with a common symptom, urinary incontinence, which is a serious medical and social handicap. Several neurotransmitters regulate the function of the lower urinary tract, including noradrenaline, acetylcholine, and serotonin. LÄS MER
5. Mucosal regeneration following sinus surgery : an experimental study and clinical study
Sammanfattning : The investigations described in this thesis concerned functional and structural aspects of the regenerated sinus mucosa following sinus surgery. In a biopsy material collected pre- and postoperatively from patients with chronic maxillary sinusitis, randomized for treatment with either Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) or the Caldwell-Luc procedure (CL), histological parameters were evaluated semi-quantitatively and correlated to endoscopic findings and patients' symptoms.
