1. Ventilation of the Paranasal Sinuses. A study using the 133-Xenon Washout Technique
Sammanfattning : A noninvasive 133-xenon washout technique was used to evaluate the ventilation of the paranasal sinuses in healthy subjects and in patients with sinus disease. A mixture of air and 133-xenon is insufflated into the nasal cavities and passage into the sinuses is facilitated by a pressure increase created by letting the subjects inflate a balloon. LÄS MER
2. Mapping viruses in non-malignant tonsils, nasal polyps, sinonasal inverted papilloma and laryngeal cancer

3. Clinical, immunological and olfactory aspects of sinusitis and nasal polyposis : with special reference to patients with cystic fibrosis
Sammanfattning : The otorhinolaryngological approach to the problem concerning rhinosinusitis and nasal polyposis in the recessive genetic disorder of cystic fibrosis (CF) has been developed based on data from international studies. Opinions differ on how to treat the otolaryngological manifestations of CF (sinusitis, nasal polyps and hyposmia). LÄS MER
4. Mucosal regeneration following sinus surgery : an experimental study and clinical study
Sammanfattning : The investigations described in this thesis concerned functional and structural aspects of the regenerated sinus mucosa following sinus surgery. In a biopsy material collected pre- and postoperatively from patients with chronic maxillary sinusitis, randomized for treatment with either Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) or the Caldwell-Luc procedure (CL), histological parameters were evaluated semi-quantitatively and correlated to endoscopic findings and patients' symptoms. 5. Airborne nitric oxide : inflammatory marker and aerocrine messenger in man
Sammanfattning : We have used a chemiluminescence technique to measure gaseous nitric oxide (NO) directly in hollow organs of humans. NO production was studied in the airways of healthy controls and patients with chronic inflammatory airway disease, in the stomach of healthy subjects, in the colon of patients with inflammatory bowel disease, and in the urinary bladder of patients with cystitis.
