1. The long-term nuclear explosives predicament : final disposal of military usable fissile material in nuclear waste from nuclear power and from the elimination of nuclear weapons

2. Effective Spatial Mapping for Coupled Code Analysis of Thermal–Hydraulics/Neutron–Kinetics of Boiling Water Reactors
Sammanfattning : Analyses of nuclear reactor safety have increasingly required coupling of full three dimensional neutron kinetics (NK) core models with system transient thermal–hydraulics (TH) codes. In order to produce results within a reasonable computing time, the coupled codes use two different spatial description of the reactor core. LÄS MER
3. Physical Characterization of Actinide Particles - A Study on Novel Techniques for Radiological and Nuclear Safeguard Investigations
Sammanfattning : This thesis presents a study of advanced analytical techniques, for the characterization of actinide particles originating from the non-peaceful use of nuclear technology and from international inspections of the nuclear fuel cycle associated with non-proliferation agreements. The thesis is based on five papers, which will be referred to by Paper I-V in the text. LÄS MER
4. High Performance Fuels for Water-Cooled Reactor Systems
Sammanfattning : Investigation of nitride fuels and their properties has, for decades, been propelled on the basis of their desirable high metal densities and high thermal conductivities, both of which oer intrinsic advantages to performance, economy, and safety in fast and light water reactor systems. In this time several key obstacles have been identied as impeding the implementation of these fuels for commercial applications; namely chemical interactions with air and steam, the noted diculty in sintering of the material, and the high costs associated with the enrichment of 15N. 5. Nuclear Power as a Climate Change Mitigation Option: a Modelling Approach
Sammanfattning : Although nuclear power can provide electricity with very low life cycle carbon emissions and thus reduce the cost of climate change mitigation, it also brings along many specific challenges: accident risk, need for radioactive waste management and nuclear weapons proliferation risk. Due to this controversial nature nuclear power, among other energy forms, has been relatively little studied in a climate mitigation context. LÄS MER
