36. Imaging brain functions during neuropsychological testing
Sammanfattning : This thesis has dealt with the development of tools for assessing cognitive functions(attention and working memory) using functional imaging and the evaluation of the modulatory effects of performance, nicotine, alcohol, brain injury and auditory interference. Two cognitive tasks commonly used in the assessment of patients with brain injury, the externally-generated Perceptual Maze Test (PMT) and an internally-generated arithmetical task, Serial-7, were used as activation paradigms. 37. Nicotinic effects on midbrain dopamine neurons : a dual mechanism of action
Sammanfattning : The neurons of the mesocorticolimbic dopamine system are located in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) in the mesencephalon and send their projections to forebrain structures, such as the prefrontal cortex, the amygdala and the nucleus accumbens. The dopamine system is important in regulating mood and motivation as well as cognitive function and appear to be primarily involved in drug dependence, since most drugs abused by man stimulate this system. 38. Regulation of glucose transport and insulin-stimulated GLUT4 translocation in skeletal muscle
Sammanfattning : Skeletal muscle represents about 40% of body mass and accounts for at least 80% of glucose disposal under insulin-stimulated conditions. Furthermore, GLUT4 transport protein is the primary component of the glucose transport system in skeletal muscle. LÄS MER
39. Issues of validity in longitudinal studies of youth tobacco use
Sammanfattning : In the Stockholm region, a prospective longitudinal study: BROMS Cohort Study (Children s Smoking and Environment in the Stockholm County) was conducted between 1997 and 2005, with the primary aim to investigate determinants of adolescents´ tobacco use. It was based on a sample recruited in schools with junior high grades. LÄS MER
40. Inherited smoking behaviour and Human Epididymis Protein 4 predict smoking-related morbidity and mortality
Sammanfattning : GENERAL AIM: To investigate prognostic markers identifying smokers with increased risk of smoking-related diseases in the population. BACKGROUND: Gene variance in the BDNF- respectively CHRNA-gene has been implicated in different smoking behaviours and the risk alleles have also demonstrated an additional risk increase of smoking-related diseases.
