6. Fine needle aspiration cytology in diagnosis and management of childhood small round cell tumours
Sammanfattning : Fine needle aspiration (FNA) cytology is accepted for diagnosing malignant tumours in adults. However, it has been slow in gaining acceptance among paediatricians and has only been used at some centres in the routine diagnosis of childhood tumours. LÄS MER
7. Prenatal Ultrasound and X-ray - Potentially Adverse Effects on the CNS
Sammanfattning : The aim with this thesis was to assess the impact of prenatal ultrasound exposure on psychotic illness, childhood brain tumors (CBT) and school achievement, and to evaluate prenatal X-ray exposure and the risk of CBT.In a cohort study, children born in Malmö 1973-1978, where prenatal ultrasound was used routinely, were considered exposed (n=13, 212) and children born at hospitals with no use of ultrasound, were considered unexposed (n=357,733). 8. Brain tumors in children - National population-based studies on classification, diagnostics and long-term follow-up
Sammanfattning : Although the prognosis for pediatric tumors of the central nervous system (CNS) has improved over time it is urgent to reduce mortality and improve long-term quality of life for survivors. With this aim, the first step is to identify the correct diagnosis in order to choose the right therapy and avoid unnecessary treatment. LÄS MER
9. Genetic and Epigenetic Variation in the Human Genome : Analysis of Phenotypically Normal Individuals and Patients Affected with Brain Tumors
Sammanfattning : Genetic and epigenetic variation is a key determinant of human diversity and has an impact on disease predisposition. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and copy number polymorphisms (CNPs) are the main forms of genetic variation. The challenge is to distinguish normal variations from disease-associated changes. 10. Dissecting gene expression regulation in mouse embryonic stems
Sammanfattning : Every cell within an organism is derived from a single fertilized egg that undergoes cellular differentiation and development to generate mature specialized cells. Mouse embryonic stem cells (ESCs) derived from the inner cell mass (ICM) of the pre-implantation blastocyst have proven to be a model to study gene expression during differentiation and development.
