1. Somatic Genetic Variation in Children: from Mosaicism to Cancer
Sammanfattning : This thesis concerns various aspects of somatic mosaicism and genetic intratumor heterogeneity in childhood cancer. In paper I, I show that aneuploidy in itself does not lead to the level of chromosomal instability that is typically seen in malignant cells. This finding strongly argues against the so called autocatalytic theory of carcinogenesis. LÄS MER
2. Genetic factors in childhood cancer. Associations between tumors in childhood and adulthood, and prevalence of germline TP53 mutations
Sammanfattning : The etiology of childhood cancer is largely unknown. Approximately 1-10% of all childhood tumors are associated with known cancer predisposition syndromes. However, the contribution may be underestimated due to the failure to detect patients with genetic susceptibility for cancer when relying on known family pattern and anomalies. LÄS MER
3. Hedgehog signaling in rhabdomyosarcoma : role of GLI factors and splice variants in signal transduction
Sammanfattning : Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is the most common soft-tissue childhood cancer. Deregulation of the Hedgehog (HH) signaling pathway, which is essential for proper embryonic development, has been implicated as a driving force for this cancer. LÄS MER
4. Nestin : filament formation and expression in myogenesis and muscle disorders
Sammanfattning : Intermediate filaments (IF), together with microfilaments and microtubules, are the major components of the cytoskeleton of eukaryotic cells. In myogenic cells three IF proteins are expressed; desmin, vimentin and nestin. LÄS MER
5. Fine needle aspiration cytology in diagnosis and management of childhood small round cell tumours
Sammanfattning : Fine needle aspiration (FNA) cytology is accepted for diagnosing malignant tumours in adults. However, it has been slow in gaining acceptance among paediatricians and has only been used at some centres in the routine diagnosis of childhood tumours. LÄS MER
