1. Cubic Cell Membrane Architectures. Taking another look at membrane bound cell spaces
Sammanfattning : A systematic study of cell membrane morphologies whose structure is governed by cubic symmetries has been performed. It is suggested that they are described by periodic cubic surfaces for which space filling surface foliations given by truncated Fourier series defined by the space groups is used as structural representations. 2. Membrane morphology and homeostasis: An electron microscopy approach
Sammanfattning : Biological membranes allow life as we know it to exist. Primarily assembled from lipids and proteins, their morphology and function can greatly vary between species or even within the same cell. They create physical boundaries, separating different cells from each other and forming functional compartments within the cells. LÄS MER
3. Asexual embryogenesis in plants
Sammanfattning : The capacity of somatic cells and pollen grains or microspores to undergo embryogenesis is an important property used in improvement and regeneration of plants. Furthermore, somatic embryogenesis as well as pollen embryogenesis show many similarities with zygotic embryogenesis and are, thus, good model systems. LÄS MER
4. Ultrastructural Studies of the Airway Epithelium in Airway Diseases
Sammanfattning : Ultrastructural studies of airway epithelium in airway disease are important for diagnosis and understanding the underlying pathology which helps clinicians to improve the patients' treatment.Airway biopsies from a 5-month old boy with respiratory problems and gastro-oesophageal reflux were studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). 5. Electrochemical properties of alternative polymer electrolytes in fuel cells
Sammanfattning : Fuel cells, using hydrogen as energy carrier, allow chemically‑stored energy to be utilized for many applications, including balancing the electrical grid and the propulsion of vehicles. To make the fuel cell technology more accessible and promote a sustainable energy society, this thesis focuses on alternative polymer electrolytes, as they can potentially lead to a lower cost and a more environmentally‑friendly fuel cell.
