  1. 1. Dealing with Digits : Arithmetic, Memory and Phonology in Deaf Signers

    Författare :Josefine Andin; Mary Rudner; Jerker Rönnberg; Örjan Dahlström; Lars Nyberg; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Adult deaf signers; phonology; arithmetic; short-term memory; working memory; neuro imaging; Vuxna teckenspråkiga döva; fonologi; aritmetik; korttidsminne; arbetsminne; hjärnavbildning;

    Sammanfattning : Deafness has been associated with poor abilities to deal with digits in the context of arithmetic and memory, and language modality-specific differences in the phonological similarity of digits have been shown to influence short-term memory (STM). Therefore, the overall aim of the present thesis was to find out whether language modality-specific differences in phonological processing between sign and speech can explain why deaf signers perform at lower levels than hearing peers when dealing with digits. 2. 2. Blindness and Second Language Acquisition : Studies of Cognitive Advantages in Blind L1 and L2 speakers

    Författare :Helena Smeds; Niclas Abrahamsson; Lars-Göran Nilsson; Loraine Obler; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Early blindness; late blindness; L1 speakers; L2 speakers; cognitive advantages; second language acquisition; phonological short-term memory; recognition memory; episodic memory; speech perception in noise; accentedness in L2 speech; Bilingualism; tvåspråkighet;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of this study is to investigate whether blind individuals display cognitive advantages over sighted individuals with regard to second language acquisition. Previous studies from neuropsychology have indicated that this is the case. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Attention capture by sudden and unexpected changes : a multisensory perspective

    Författare :Erik Marsja; Jessica K. Ljungberg; Gregory Neely; Patrik Hansson; François Vachon; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Attention Capture; Tactile; Auditory; Visual; Crossmodal; Bimodal; Distraction; Short-term memory; Attention; Psychology; psykologi;

    Sammanfattning : The main focus for this thesis was cross-modal attention capture by sudden and unexpected sounds and vibrations, known as deviants, presented in a stream the same to-be-ignored stimulus. More specifically, the thesis takes a multisensory perspective and examines the possible similarities and differences in how deviant vibrations and sounds affect visual task performance (Study I), and whether the deviant and standard stimuli have to be presented within the same modality to capture attention away from visual tasks (Study II). 5. 5. A naïve sampling model of intuitive confidence intervals

    Författare :Patrik Hansson; Peter Juslin; Ralph Hertwig; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; overconfidence; subjective probability; sampling model; short-term memory; age-differences.; Psychology; Psykologi;

    Sammanfattning : A particular field in research on judgment and decision making (JDM) is concerned with realism of confidence in one’s knowledge. An interesting finding is the so-called format dependence effect, which implies that assessment of the same probability distribution generates different conclusions about over- or underconfidence depending on the assessment format.
