  1. 1. Artery Wall Imaging and Effects of Postmenopausal Estrogen Therapy

    Författare :Kenny A. Rodriguez-Macias Wallberg; Tord Naessén; Lars-Åke Mattsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Medicine; artery wall thickness; tunica media; tunica intima; arterial stiffness; carotid; aorta; cardiovascular disease; atherosclerosis; menopause; estrogen; hormone therapy; ultrasound; Medicin; Dermatology and venerology; clinical genetics; internal medicine; Dermatologi och venerologi; klinisk genetik; invärtesmedicin;

    Sammanfattning : Postmenopausal estrogen therapy, initiated early in the menopause, seems to protect against development of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases. This thesis concerns studies of artery wall thickness and arterial stiffness estimated by noninvasive ultrasound techniques in long-term estrogen treated postmenopausal women who initiated therapy at the time of the menopause. 2. 2. Carotid Artery Wall Layer Dimensions during and after Pre-eclampsia : An investigation using non-invasive high-frequency ultrasound

    Författare :Tansim Akhter; Tord Naessen; Anna-Karin Wikström; Henry Nisell; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Systemic lupus erythematosus; normal pregnancy; pre-eclampsia; high-frequency ultrasound; common carotid artery; intima media ratio; cardiovascular disease.; Obstetrik och gynekologi; Obstetrics and Gynaecology;

    Sammanfattning : Pre-eclampsia is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) later in life. The ‘gold standard’ for estimating cardiovascular risk - ultrasound assessment of the common carotid artery intima-media thickness (CCA-IMT) - does not convincingly demonstrate this increased risk. 3. 3. Cardiovascular Disease and Immune Mechanisms in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

    Författare :Dag Leonard; Lars Rönnblom; Gunnel Nordmark; Maija-Leena Eloranta; Søren Jacobsen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Systemic Lupus Erythematosus; Cardiovascular Disease; Intima-Media Thickness; STAT4; IRF8; Interferon-α; Plasmacytoid dendritic cell; GM-CSF; IL-3; Medicin; Medicine; Genetics; Genetik; Immunologi; Immunology;

    Sammanfattning : Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune, inflammatory disease characterized by autoantibody production and an activated type I interferon system. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is as a major cause of morbidity and mortality. The aim of this thesis was to identify genetic risk factors for CVD in SLE. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Cardiovascular structure and function in obesity. The impact of body composition, sleep apnea and sustained weight loss

    Författare :Dimitris Kardassis; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Obesity; weight loss; cardiac function; cardiac structure; inflammation; intima-media thickness; obstructive sleep apnoea;

    Sammanfattning : Background: Obesity is associated with disturbances in cardiovascular structure and function varying along with the degree of fatness, but the mechanisms underlying this co-variation are unclear. Short-term weight loss appears to have favourable effects on the cardiovascular system, but whether such improvements are maintained in the long run is unknown. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Influence of Herring (Clupea harengus) Intake on Risk Factors for Cardiovascular Disease

    Författare :Helen Lindqvist; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Herring; cardiovascular disease; metabolic syndrome; overweight; intima media thickness; lipoproteins; n-3 fatty acids; antioxidants; fish;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis describes four studies that investigated whether or not herring (Clupea harengus) intake decreases cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors. It has previously been shown that fatty fish and fish oil intake decreases the risk of atherosclerosis and CVD. LÄS MER
