  1. 1. Leishmaniasis in Sweden. Molecular, diagnostic and epidemiological studies of the parasite Leishmania in a non-endemic country

    Författare :Sara Karlsson Söbirk; Infektionsmedicin; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; leishmaniasis; Parasite; Epidemiological studies; Serology; diagnostic method; Immune System; Sweden; leishmaniasis; Leishmania; immune system; chitinase; CAZy; Immune evasion; Antimicrobial peptide AMP ; Chemokine; epidemiology; Sweden; Serological assays; diagnostic method;

    Sammanfattning : This doctoral thesis consists of four separate papers, in which we; investigate epidemiological and clinical aspects of leishmaniasis in Sweden in order to increase awareness of the disease, elucidate some aspects of the interaction of the parasite and the human immune system and validate serological tools as a complement for diagnosis of leishmaniasis.. 2. 2. Biomarkers for Peripartum Depression : Focusing on aspects of the immune system and the metabolome

    Författare :Emma Bränn; Alkistis Skalkidou; Emma Fransson; Fotios Papadopoulos; Inger Sundström Poromaa; Daniel Lindqvist; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Peripartum depression; Immune system; Metabolome; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Sammanfattning : Peripartum depression is a common, multifactorial, and potentially devastating disease among new mothers. A biological marker for peripartum depression would facilitate early detection, better understanding of the pathophysiology, and identification of targets for treatment. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Pathogen-mediated selection in the immune system of rodents : Exploring selection targets, functional effects and trade-offs

    Författare :Mridula Nandakumar; Funktionell zoologi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; pathogen-mediated selection; bank voles; Myodes glareolus; immune system; balancing selection; immune response; rodents; positive selection; transcriptomics;

    Sammanfattning : Pathogens cause disease and play an important role in shaping evolution of the host immune system. They create pressure on host immunity to evolve in numerous ways, most commonly by increasing divergence between species (positive selection) or increasing polymorphisms within a population (balancing selection). 4. 4. Involvement of the immune system in phytohaemagglutinin-induced structural and functional precocious maturation of the gut in young rats

    Författare :Olena Prykhodko; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; cytokines; mucosa; development; Gastrointestinal tract; mammals; immune system; T-cells;

    Sammanfattning : Mammals are born with an immature gastrointestinal (GI) tract that allows the uptake of the specific nutrients and bioactive macromolecules in the milk, especially the protecting maternal antibodies. Eventually during weaning, the intake of milk decreases while that of solid food increases, and the GI system undergoes prominent structural and functional changes adapting the young this dietary change. 5. 5. The Immune System in the Oldest-Old : Clinical and Immunological Studies in the NONA Immune Cohort

    Författare :Bengt-Olof Nilsson; Jan Ernerudh; Anders Wikby; Sture Löfgren; Karlis Pauksens; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Elderly; selection; health status; lymphocyte subsets; CD8; CMV; cytomegalovirus; immune risk; immune risk phenotype; IRP; T-cells; interleukin 6; IL-6; survival; mortality; antinuclear antibodies; ANA; ageing; immunosenescence; MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Sammanfattning : The oldest-old (people aged 80 or older) constituted 5 % of the population in Sweden in 2000, an increase from 1.5 % fifty years earlier. The immune system undergoes dramatic changes at high age, sometimes referred to as “immunosenescence”. LÄS MER
