1. The Immune System in the Oldest-Old : Clinical and Immunological Studies in the NONA Immune Cohort
Sammanfattning : The oldest-old (people aged 80 or older) constituted 5 % of the population in Sweden in 2000, an increase from 1.5 % fifty years earlier. The immune system undergoes dramatic changes at high age, sometimes referred to as “immunosenescence”. LÄS MER
2. Juvenile chronic arthritis. A study on epidemiology and outcome in Costa Rican children
Sammanfattning : Problems associated with interpreting and comparing epidemiological studies dealing with chronic arthropathies in children include the diversity of classification criteria and selection bias. This study is a step towards elucidating the impact of genetic and environmental factors on disease frequencies and manifestations of Juvenile Chronic Arthritis (JCA) in Costa Rica. LÄS MER
3. Antinuclear and antiphospholipid antibodies versus disease manifestations and clinical outcomes in systemic lupus erythematosus
Sammanfattning : Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) has an exceptionally heterogeneous clinical spectrum, ranging from mild disease limited to skin and joints to severe manifestations with renal disorder, central nervous system disease, severe cytopenias and thromboembolic events. Important clinical challenges include the prediction of disease flares and the identification of individuals that are likely to evolve severe disease with accrual of organ damage and worse prognosis. 4. Perinuclear Antineutrophil Cytoplasmic Antibodies in Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Sammanfattning : Antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCAs) are a group of autoantibodies which are specific for granulocyte antigens. By indirect immunofluorescence (llF) on ethanol-fixed neutrophils, ANCAs can be divided into two types: a cytoplasmic staining pattern (C-ANCA) or a perinuclear staining pattern (P-ANCA). LÄS MER
5. Studies on the cytokine network in multiple sclerosis
Sammanfattning : Multiple sclerosis (MS) is considered to be an inflammatory immune-mediated disease of the central nervous system (CNS), the aetiology of which remains enigmatic. Cytokines produced by infiltrating inflammatory cells and resident cells in the brain are proposed to play a major role in directing and regulating the immune response, as well as mediating tissue damage.
