1. Renewable Energy in Energy-Efficient, Low-Pollution Systems
Sammanfattning : Energy use accounts for the dominating fraction of total sulphur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxide (NOx), volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. In this thesis, different strategies for reducing these emissions are evaluated, using a bottom-up approach. The thesis is divided in two parts. LÄS MER
2. Computational Studies of Hydrogen Storage Materials : Physisorbed and Chemisorbed Systems
Sammanfattning : This thesis deals with first-principles calculations based on density functional theory to investigate hydrogen storage related properties in various high-surface area materials and the ground state crystal structures in alkaline earth dicarbide systems. High-surface area materials have been shown to be very promising for hydrogen storage applications owing to them containing numerous hydrogen adsorption sites and good kinetics for adsorption/desorption. 3. Quantum aspects of hydrogen in metals and oxides from density-functional calculations
Sammanfattning : Atomic hydrogen dissolved in a solid or adsorbed on a solid surfacedisplays many remarkable features, and is a subject ofgreat technological interest. An increased understanding of hydrogen/solid systems can supportthe development of areas as diverse asproton exchange membranes for fuel cells, heterogeneous catalysis, and growth of semiconductor devices. 4. Corrosion of Ferritic Stainless Steels Used in Solid Oxide Fuel Cells
Sammanfattning : Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) are energy conversion systems with clean emissions (depending on the fuel used) and high electrical efficiencies, which could potentially replace conventional conversion systems such as combustion engines. However, other issues, such as high costs and limited lifetime, must be resolved before widespread commercialization of SOFCs can be achieved. LÄS MER
5. Electrochromic Properties of Iridium Oxide Based Thin Films
Sammanfattning : Electrochromic iridium oxide (IrOx) and iridium-tantalum oxide (IrTaOx) thin films were prepared by reactive magnetron sputtering. Composition, density, and structure were determined using Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and electron energy loss spectroscopy.
