1. Exercise and Functional Performance in Middle-aged Patients with Knee Osteoarthritis
Sammanfattning : The overall purpose of this thesis was to explore the impact of exercise and functional performance on development and treatment of knee osteoarthritis in the middle aged. In this thesis, I have studied a population based cohort of middle-aged subjects (35-54 years, 42 % women) with chronic knee pain at baseline, to evaluate the longitudinal effect of muscle weakness on knee osteoarthritis development, the relationship between muscle function and joint load and the effects of exercise on joint load. 2. Exercising on the edge: mitochondrial and metabolic responses to intense training
Sammanfattning : Exercise and exercise training induces several physiological adaptations that increase the oxidative capacity of the muscles and improve glucose regulation. While the positive metabolic adaptations and effects on glucose regulation after exercise and exercise training have been extensively studied, negative outcomes have not. LÄS MER
3. Physical exercise for older people : focusing on people living in residential care facilities and people with dementia
Sammanfattning : The main purposes of this thesis were to evaluate a high-intensity functional weight-bearing exercise programme, regarding its applicability (attendance, achieved intensity, adverse events) as well as its effect on physical functions and activities of daily living (ADL) among older people living in residential care facilities, with a special focus on people with dementia. Furthermore, a main purpose was to systematically review the applicability and effects of physical exercise on physical functions, cognitive functions, and ADL among people with dementia. LÄS MER
4. Improving disaster response evaluations : Supporting advances in disaster risk management through the enhancement of response evaluation usefulness
Sammanfattning : Future disasters or crises are difficult to predict and therefore hard to prepare for. However, while a specific event might not have happened, it can be simulated in an exercise. LÄS MER
5. Evaluation of the Otago Exercise Programme with or without motivational interviewing : Feasibility, experiences, effects and adherence among older community-dwelling people
Sammanfattning : Falls and injuries related to falls are one of the most common health problems among older people and are becoming increasingly more frequent. Regular exercise has been identified as one of the most effective fall-prevention activities for older people; however, awareness of the impact of exercise programmes and adherence to recommended exercise among the elderly population is generally low.
